IE7 does not load webpages, says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" or "The address is not valid "

I am unable to load web pages in Internet Explorer. I can get on the Internet in Mozilla Firefox and I can sign on to AOL Instant Messenger, so clearly I am on the Internet. When I open Internet Explorer, it says "IE cannot display the webpage." If I type in a webpage like "google.com", it changes the address in the address bar to http:/// (with 3 slashes) and displays "The address is not valid." I read a response somewhere on here that deleting something in a person's Hijackthis log fixed this problem. I have attached my log if anyone knows how to interpret them (I sure don't.)

Hello enflmdphnx,

Your hijackthis log look fine.

Start the Registry Editor by going to Start -> Run -> type REGEDIT -> click OK -> navigate to these keys in the left pane of the Registry Editor window. Check your registry settings:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPrefix

Make sure the Default value data is set to http://

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes

Make sure www value data is set to http://

If no joy, uninstalll IE7, which will revert you back to IE6, Then test.

Either confirm that IE is allowed to access the internet through Norton's Firewall or
totally uninstall Norton Internet Security and see if you can access with IE.

I'm not a fan of Download Managers. Did you install this one from a reputable source?

mtz1of4, Wow, quick to correct! :) You can uninstall IE7 in Windows XP, and enflmdphnx did not say what OS he is using. I see in the HJT log that he is using Vista.

enflmdphnx, did you check the registry key that I posted earlier, to see if the value are correct. You need to be in Admin mode to access the registry.

If no joy, what did you change 4 days ago? Added some software? Updated some software? Reverse the change. Perform a System Restore back to a date before 4 days ago when you started having trouble.

war1, the registry keys were correct. I can't remember any substantial changes to the system. I did a system restore and it didn't correct the issue. Just in case it's worth noting, IE does not work in safe mode either.

war1, I think we were both checking out his his hjt log at the same time and I always take a look at what you are able to get out while I am typing and I try not to repeat what you are recommending. And now with Vista causing so many issues, I definitely see what OS people are running. I really need to get used to reloading the question before posting, but old habits...

Download managers are fine, but sometimes what they download can be questionable. They also may try to bypass the OS's network stack. If you are connected to the net via hispeed, Cable, DSL, I don't see a need for them. Just my 2 cents.

Does IE7 on Vista have the No-Addons mode? Try right clicking on the E on your desktop and select "Start without add-ons" and see if that helps. Probably won't, but if it does, then it is an add-on that we will have to key in on.

I still think it could be Norton blocking you.

Starting IE7 without add-ons does not help. And here is where the next problem lies. Now clearly you see that I am running Norton Firewall because it is in my HJT log, but I cannot find Norton anywhere on my computer. It's not in my Start > All Programs. Nothing under Norton.

Is there a Norton icon in your Systray? Probably not because the above references in your hjt log is for the Services of Norton which means it is running in the background and most definitely blocking you because it is not alerting you.

If this were a free trial from a new computer purchase, it may have just shut itself down. I do not know what happens to NIS after it's trial is over.

You could try this uninstall utility,
Get Norton's Removal Tool here and run it.

But you should confirm your machine is as clean as you can also.

Have you used Vista's Search for Norton? to see if you can activate the AV scan, perhaps?

If your version of NIS is 2007, you'll note that there is no uninstall icon listed in All Programs; instead, you'll have to use Microsoft's "Add and remove programs" from the Windows control panel.

mtz1of4, No Norton icon in my system tray. I ran the Norton's Removal Tool and ran it. I also downloaded Windows Uninstaller Utility and found nothing related to Norton. Nothing in Add/Remove Programs listed Norton. I did uninstall Symantec Antivirus and LiveUpdate though. I did a search for Norton and found some folders but nothing with a program file in them.

After doing the above, I ran another HJT scan and here are the results. Please let me know if you see Norton still listed.

(Also, I can't connect to AIM 6.0 in addition to IE, but AIM 5.9 works fine as does Mozilla still.)

So I'm guessing perhaps a reboot between your above post and your Accepting solution must have helped. Glad it's working for you now.

Please confirm that at least Windows Firewall is turned on, now because removing NIS has at least removed that one, but you should have one if you are not behind a router with a firewall in it.

Also, make sure you add an Antivirus program. You need to have that at the very minimum.
Windows Defender and Adaware are only AntiMalware/Spyware programs, not AV programs.

I use the free Avast here at www.avast.com both a free version and a professional.
But there are other free ones, including AVG, here http://free.grisoft.com/
This one has a 30 day trial, but excellent reviews also.
