We are in the process of planning our company-wide migration to Windows XP. Most of our users currently use Windows 2000 Professional, with IE6. The people of our Pension department utilize a menu-driven website on our intranet that links to various documents and forms for printing out and sending to members. We have configured the .doc and .xls extensions of all the computers to download without prompt (being asked to Open or Save) and to also NOT open inside the browser (the users need documents to open up in their native programs, rather than within IE) by changing the settings in the File and Folder options in Windows Explorer.
So, as things are now, a user can click on a link to a document, and a window briefly (in a blink) opens and closes, loading the document, and bringing up either Word or Excel. What we have found, however, is that with Internet Explorer 7, the documents load as they should (outside of the browser) but that IE7 always leaves the empty/blank window open, after launching the document and program. We have been able to replicate this issue on all computers and also on Opera (we use it occasionally in the IT department).
This is an extremely frustrating issue for our users in testing, and we are unable to proceed with our migration, so long as it does tihs. The users work with dozens of documents by launching them from the website, and do not wish to have to manually close each empty/blank window that appears, after the documents have been loaded, as it fills up their taskbars quickly. The windows should just open long enough to load up the document with the specific program, and then close, leaving the open document in whatever program (Word or Excel), and the menu, in the taskbar.
We have attempted tweaking every aspect of IE7 we can think of (disabling add-ons, lowering security settings, turning off tabbed browsing, etc).
Please help!!
Thank you!!
