The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Internet Explorer can not connect to web sites.
Tags: Microsoft, Internet Explorer 7.0, Vista Home Premimum
I have wireless internet connection at home. My laptop is connected to my home wireless network. Windows downloads updates, my virus program downloads updates, I can chat on MSN, but funnily, Internet Explorer can not connect to any web page. When I start Internet Explorer and type a web page, it says "Can not Display the Webpage, Most Likely causes You are not Connected to Internet, The web site is encountering problems, there might be an error in the address " . Under Tools menu when I click "Diagnose Connection Problems" it says "Windows did not find any problems with this computer's network connection".  My internet explorer was functioning perfectly so far. I am suffering from this problem for the last two days. Please help.

Seems like one of the following problems:

1. Simple proxy server is set which needs to be removed
2. Some spyware installed that is playing tricks with your browser
3. Internet Explorer components corrupted
4. Registry settings of IE corrupted

If it is a proxy issue, you can go to LAN Settings and tell IE not to use a Proxy server and see if that resolves the issue.

If it is a Spyware or Registry corruption, you can usually resolve them using freeware tools to clean the registry or ant-spyware tools.

Corruption of IE means you will need to reinstall Internet Explorer.

Alternatively, you can simply install Firefox which is a better browser and forget IE altogether. I have both of them working on my machine but prefer using Firefox myself.

I think I have to uninstall and re-install IE. Can I uninstall IE like any other software running on my pc ? from control panel ? How can I re-install it ?

02.16.2008 at 01:58AM PST, ID: 20909038
Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs->
Add/Remove Windows Components from Left panel
Untick Internet Explorer to uninstall then go back and Tick again to re-install

In control panel, under programs tab, the options are "Unistall a program and Turn Windows Features on or off". If I choose "uninstall a program" internet explorer is not listed among other programs. If I choose "Turn Windows Features On or Off", internet exporer is not listed therefore I can not tick it off. ( I am using Vista Home Premium. )  Awaiting your comments.

It may be a corrupt winsock.
Try winsockfix.exe and see if that restores the settings.
You can google it and download it from a load of different sites.

Try the following from Vista:

Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Advanced Tab
and click on RESET button

Have you tried to ping the sites from a command prompt - is it a DNS issue? I wouldn't advise to uninstall and reinstall IE until you do some basic checks. Do you have a DNS server setup and is it working? As a previous poster asked do you have a proxy server set in IE or under other software?

Guys, He mentioned that Windows updates, antivirus updates work and also MSN is working which means his basic Internet components are working.

It is specific to IE

02.16.2008 at 06:00AM PST, ID: 20909580
Open Internet Explorer
File-> Uncheck the Work Offline
Tools->Internet Option->Connection->LAN Settings -> Check Automatically Detect Settings then uncheck the rest.

Hello alihakanersoy,

Download and install Firefox, as suggested originally by hbustan. This will tell if the problem is IE or a more general browser problem.
http://www.getfirefox.com

1. Clear your DNS cache.  Go to Start > Run and type CMD
and hit OK.
At the command prompt, type ipconfig /flushDNS
and hit OK.

2. Clear your cache.  Go to Tools > Internet Options > General tab.  Under Temporary Internet Files, click "Delete Files" button. Also click "Delete Cookies" button. Click OK.

3. If no joy, check if your PC is blocking the site.  Do a search for HOSTS file and open it with an editor like Notepad. Delete any line that has the blocked site in it.

HOSTS file is located in
Windows XP      =      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K     =     C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98/ME     =     C:\WINDOWS

It is a hidden file. Go to any folder and select Tools > Folders Options > View. Check "Show hidden files and folders". Click OK.

4a. If you are using Internet Explorer, check if the site is restricted or blocked.  Go to Tools > Internet Options > Security. Hightlight Restricted Sites and see if the blocked site is located there.

4b. Also under Content tab > Content Advisor, check if the site is restricted there. Remove it.

4c. Also, under Security tab, add the website to your trusted zone.

5. Check if antispyware, antivirus, or firewall is blocking the website.

6. If you want to reinstall IE, in Vista Internet Explorer is part of operating system.  to reinstall IE you need to reinstall the OS.

Hope this helps!

war1 , when I try to flush the DNS, it says "this operation requires elevation"

hbustan & war1 : I installed Firefox. It works. Thanks.

I think my IE is really of out order. This is a bit frustrating. I do not want to install Windows from the start just to repair my IE. I remember reading in the past somewhere that it is possible in Vista to bring all computer settings back to the settings of a past date. Is this really possible? Can I repiar my IE by doing so ?

If using Vista and you get an error, run regsvr32.exe from an elevated command prompt. To get an elevated command prompt, right-click on the "Command Prompt" shortcut and select "Run as Administrator".
