The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Change the default image viewer in IE7
Tags: Microsoft, Internet Explorer 7, TIF viewer
We use I.E. to view our incoming faxes. One users I.E.7 default image viewer has changed to a QuickTime viewer plugin "QTplugin.ocx". It views the tif images fine, but will not print or print-preview.

I'd like to set the dafualt viewer back to the original, but can not find a place to make that selection. Changing the file association for tif files has no affect on the plugin I.E. 7 uses. If you disable the "QTPlugin.ocx" you can no longer even view tif images in IE. I have uninstalled QuickTime, but it didn't change I.E's prefrence for the QT viewer.

The workststation is XP Pro SP2, all critical updates, and I.E.7.

Thanks.

in IE7 goto ----  Tools - internet options - advanced - and click on reset this will restore IE 7back to 'factory settings' and then you close IE7 and restart it and let it restore things.

Hello DrPing,

This script will restore your TIF file association to Windows XP default
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_tiff_fix.zip

Hope this helps!

thought it was too easy!
you mention you changed the file types tiff back  to "microsoft office document imaging file" did you change both "TIF" and "TIFF"

03.16.2008 at 11:00AM PDT, ID: 21137749
I only had tif selected, but changing the changing the association for tiff, did not change the plugin I.E.7 is using to open the tif files for faxes.

Also, I think the script war1 provided only changes the XP file associations, not what I.E.7 uses to view the files. At least it didn't seem to change the plugin IE is using to open tif files. Even the little QT screen pops up for a split second when you view a tif file.

Thanks for trying though.

You should reboot the computer after the file association change.  You did uninstall QuickTime?

If no joy, go to IE > Tools > Options > Advanced, and disable third party extensions.

DrPing--"Changing the file association for tif files has no affect on the plugin I.E. 7 uses"  I do not know how you tried to change the associations.
Time for me to show ignorance.  While WinXP and IE7 may come with default associations, I thought the user could change those associations for each file type.  What happens when you right click on a .tif file (or any other file)|Open With|select one of the choices offered or "Choose Program" and select from that list|OK?
If you like the results repeat the procedure and this time click the box at the bottom left of the Choose Program window "Always use the selected program..." and then OK.

Yes, I rebooted the computer after both changing the file extension association, and running the registry script you provided.

Yes Quick time was uninstalled.

I have already tried to disable third party extensions. All I get when trying to view the faxes in IE is a blank page with an image place holder (blank X).

Just so you know, tif images open fine and print great in explorer and use the coerrct file associations too. The problem is only in I.E.

If the QTPlugin.ocx is disbaled, I.E. can't view the tif image.

03.16.2008 at 02:31PM PDT, ID: 21138581
if IE can't view the itf file when the QTplugin is disable that means you need to install another tif viewer  for IE. - disabling the qtplugin is correct, its just ythat you need something else to view tiffs.
look on the other Pcs that work and see what addd-in they have for tiff viewers.

Many graphic viewers can open .tif files
http://www.fileinfo.net/help/image-viewers.html
Did you try the suggestion above "What happens when you right click on a .tif file (or any other file)|Open With|select one of the choices offered or "Choose Program" and select from that list|OK?

Currently tif files are set to be opened by Microsoft office document imaging, but can be changed to Microsoft Image and Fax viewer, and either works fine to open, view, or print tif file in  WINDOWS EXPLORER.

The problem is INTERNET EXPLORER 7, doesn't care what program you have set to open tif files. It uses QTPlugin. and the only way I knew what it was using to open tif files was the big Q flash screen. There is no setting in Internet Explorer (that I have seen anyway) to tell Internet Explorer which pluging to use for anything. The plugins are either enabled or disabled, and if QTPlugin is disabled, Internet Explorer will not open tif files (but Windows Explorer will just fine).

03.18.2008 at 03:57AM PDT, ID: 21149669
there must be some else going on - I "opened" a tiff file with internet explorer (7)  and it used microsoft imaging.
I then changed the file assoociations in windows explorer to paintshoppro and then re-opened the tiff file this time it used paintshop pro.

when you say 'will not open the files'   does it ask you to save them? or is it an error mesage?

have you changed both "tiff" and "tif" ? in the file types? and rechecked them?

03.18.2008 at 05:35AM PDT, ID: 21150251
Both tif and tiff files open fine in Windows Explorer, associating the types to any program that understands those file types. (probably even paint).

Internet Explorer opens tiff or tif files in QTPlugin regardles of the association. If the QTPlugin addon is disabled, tif/tiff images opened in Internet Explorer only show a place holder (box with a red X) and the image is blank. I.E. has been reset and advanced settings have been returned to defaults. Quick Time has been uninstalled. Going to uninstall IE7 and see what that does.

03.18.2008 at 07:27AM PDT, ID: 21151322
yeh - on my IE 7 - it asks me what I want to do with the file - open or save and if I choose open it uses whatever I've setup in the filte associations.  I tihnk its probably a windows thing
have you tried firefox just to give you another angle on the problem?
sometimes helps to prove/disprove where te problrem is
