The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

IE6 very slow to start up (> 3 min wait for initial load!!)
Tags: Microsoft, Internet Explorer 6 (sp1 with latest update), version 6 sp1, OS= win2k4 sp4 (with latest update)
Hi,

I have tried to remove & reinstall IE6 from this win2k sp4 pc and it doesn't resolve the very slow start up issue. I have tried to let it use direct connection to my cisco877 modem without going through internal proxy server (debian) and setting up the home page to be blank as well . But all this doesn't make a difference in the IE start up time (>3min!!).

Once the IE fininsh loading, the browsing is going smoothly. The machine is p4 with 512 RAM but it is more than capable for browsing internet. It has McAfee Total Protection For Small Business running (virus scan only , no firewall).

Can someone help me to troubleshoot this issue? I don't really want to re-roll this pc, as it has a lot of software installed & configured.

PS: The attached is the log from Hijackthis2.0

sorry i didn't make it clear. The tremendous increase of IE6 startup time is only just happen these few days. There is no software installed happen in the past few months.  The strange part is when IE start, it use off almost 99% of cpu (which is normal for that pc), then it become frozen and cpu utilization drop to about 25% but the frozen of IE remain for another 3 minutes!

Last week the IE only take about 10 sec at most to start up.  We have contract with McAfee and I don't think avg will be free for business usage.

I will post msconfig and result of sdfix shortly

stock99,

1. If no joy, check if plugin is interfering. Disable third party extensions. With IE open, go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced. Uncheck "Third party extensions". Click Ok. Reboot computer.

2. Clear your cache.  Go to Tools > Internet Optins > General tab.  Under Temporary Internet Files, click "Delete Files" button. Click OK.

3. Reset IE settings.  Go to Tools > Internet Options > Programs.  Click on "Reset Web Settings" button. Go to Advanced tab and click "Restore Defaults" button. Go to Security tab and move the bar to Medium or Default. Click OK. Close all browsers. Reboot the computer.

4. If no joy, check if a program running in the background is interfering with Internet Explorer. Temporarily disable antivirus, antispyware, popup blocker, ad blocker, and all Norton programs.

5. IF no joy, perform a repair of Internet Explorer. From Control Panel select Add/Remove Programs. Scroll down to Microsoft Internet Explorer and highlight it. Click on the Add/Remove button. When the IE Tools menu comes up, select Repair. Click OK.

6. If repairing does not work, uninstall and reinstall IE. At the same IE Tools menu, select "Restore the previous Windows configuration". Then reinstall Internet Explore.

You can also access the IE Toolbar by clicking Start > Run and type

I hate to say it ... but, I just uninstalled Google Toolbar from my machine having the same problem and all is OK now it seems. I had noticed some Google Updater.exe errors popping up lately. Don't know if this solves for everyone but it worked for me.

stock99, disabling third party extension would have done the same time.  It if other plugins were causing the problem, you would have got rid of them also.
