The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Website Response Time

Ok, this has me baffled:

We have two branches in Virginia.  One in Roanoke and one in Lynchburg.
We are a material handling company (think forklifts) and we have vendor websites that we use daily.  The heart of the problem is that the Lynchburg branch gets such a slow response from one of the vendor websites ( http://partner.crown.com ) that it is almost unusable.

They voiced this problem to me so I decided to see how the website worked for our Roanoke branch.  It works flawlessly with great speed.  Both branches are on fractional T1 lines provided by the same ISP.

My testing thus far:

Our HQ is in West Virginia.  To try to get as fair a test as possible, I remote desktop into Roanoke's DNS server and also into Lynchburg's DNS server.

With both server windows open (Windows 2003 Server, Internet Explorer 6 with identical settings) I start a ping to the vendor site.  The pings look almost identical with no dropped packets - good response time.

Then I do a tracert from both servers - almost identical path to the vendor site with the same response times.

When I open ANY website (Google, Microsoft, Adobe, etc...) from both servers, they display the site at identical speeds.  However, when I open the vendor site on both machines... one comes up instantly... one lags like no tomorrow.

As I said, both browsers are set exactly the same on the servers.  Every user gets great response time from the vendor site at the Roanoke branch.  Every user gets terrible response time from Lynchburg.

This has me totally stumped and I probably left out some information so please let me know if there is any more insight I can provide.

Thanks!
Mike
