OWA - Cannot enter text in messages

i have a Windows Vista PC that is accessing an Outlook web access site (exchange 2003 SP1) over https.  i can read messages, but when i initiate or respond to am email i cannot enter text into the mail body.  I get a red X in the upper left corner.  I have messed with security settings but cannot seem to get this to work.  I have also disabled "protected mode" on IE.
