I am currently accessing the internet using Firefox with no problems. Network Magic show a good connection. However, IE gives me a "cannot find server" message, Windows Update cannot access the internet, and McAfee says an internet connection is not available when I try to update it. Another PC on my network has none of these problems. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

When I go to IE / Tools / Internet Options / Connection there is no list of connections. I have deleted connections in Device Manager and reinstalled, but the result is the same -
- Firefox connects as usual
- Network Magic shows a good connection; the internet speed test shows normal speeds
- Windows Update will not work
- McAfee update will not work
- IE 7 will not work ("Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage")

Are you using proxy? If not, in the Connections tab > Settings button, uncheck "Automatically detect settings". Click OK and restart IE.
If no joy, Run this script to fix your connection. The script reinstall winsock, TCP/IP stack, and HOSTS file.

I have disabled Windows Firewall.
McAfee security center won't open, but I have ended all processes beginning with "mc".
There are no other security programs running.
I ran the WinsockFix program, but the problem remains.
When I go to IE>Tools>Internet Options>Connections I don't see the options that war1 and iskywalker mention. I have attached a screen print of the connections tab. Am I looking in the wrong place?
Thanks for your help. I really don't care about IE, but not being able to update Windows XP is a problem.

Looks like you are running as a limited user. Have you logged in as Administrator to try to access the Security Center or Internet Options->Connections?

you should go to internet connection options:
iexplorer -> tools -> options -> internet connection
and uncheck all connections that are not needed
