I've been having this problem for quite awhile and I was hoping installing Vista SP1 would solve the problem, but it's much worse now. Before SP1, I would occassionally get Internet Explorer Script Error messages for some applications that embedded IE as a web browser. For example, Google updater, and some games. Now, after installing SP1, here's are the problems:
- Instead of just 1 error dialog, I get 30 or 40 in the span or 2 or 3 seconds. I have to click on the red X to dismiss them (clicking yes or no to allow scripting has no effect). Unlike the error dialog before SP1, the dialogs are empty (e.g. no line numbers given).
- It now seems to be a problem on any web page that contains javascript, making many pages unusable. If I click on the yellow warning icon in the lower left of IE that indicates there were errors on the page, I get the 30 or 40 error messages.
- Windows sidebar gadgets (clock, calendar, weather, etc.) are blank. The analog clock is black, calendar and weather are white rectangles. One has a blue i in the corner. I can't say for sure, but I suspect this is a related problem. Let me know if you want screenshots.
There are 4 user accounts on the system. 3 of the 4 have the problem. The other user has none of the problems.
I've started researching solutions and haven't come across anything yet. Many solutions are given for XP, but they don't work for Vista. For exmaple, some people have had success reregistering various system dlls's, but when I try (using regsvr32) I get an error message under Vista, even when running command prompt as adminstrator. I don't have the error code in front of me, but I believe it's the HRESULT for access denied.
Things I've tried that have had no effect:
- verified that Internet Options/Advanced/disable script debugging options are checked.
- Internet Options/Advanced/Reset
- uninstalled google toolbar and updater since they both exhibited problems (e.g. google toolabar/settings/help/abo
ut displays 30 or 40 error dialogs). Reinstalled google toolbar 5.0.
It seems if there were some sort of repair for IE7 on vista that might help, but I haven't found any.
Finally, for what it's worth, my problem seems to be identical to this person's:
