Office Network Environment is currently:-
Server OS: Windows Server 2003 STD SP2
Workstations: Windows XP Pro SP2 - IE 7.0
Proxy Server (software based): Clearswift MIMEsweeper for Web 5.2
We have found that certain users on the network (all with roaming profiles that is) are having problems when they login and use Internet Explorer. We are using Group Policies to to set the Proxy settings on all workstations under the user configuration (User Configuration - Windows Settings - Internet Explorer Maintenance - Connection/Proxy Settings), and this currently works for all newly created profiles, but is failing to enable the tick for existing users in the check box under LAN settings. (Screen Shot Attached)
If I run a regisrty script to change the settings manually, then this changes for the current user logged on for that day, then reverts back to normal the next day.
We have found that all local profiles work without issues but all roaming profiles have this issue.
The only way we have found this to work is if we delete the roaming profile from both the workstation and the sever. Then if the user logs on and checks his/her internet settings the proxy enabled tick is active.
What I want to find out is how can I steer away from having to recreate 120 user roaming profiles, as this would include a lot of administrative overheads and groans from staff because there desktop icons and folder structure have been reset. Visiting each workstation in turn and deleting the profile and then taking ownership of the server copied profile and deleting that too is very time consuming.
I believe the settings that control the Proxy Settings are located in the C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Custom Settings\Custom0custom directories under local settings but if you take ownership of the profile on the server and delete those files the user is still unable to use the profile.
This issue is becoming extremely frustrating, as my users now have unlimited access to the websites that are supposed to be blocked by MIMEsweeper during working hours - so at the moment, facebook & YouTube is getting a right hammering, along with the network bandwidth and streaming audio.
Please help, how I can resolve this.
