Question

Log Internet Explorer Startup

Asked by: icandyinteractive

I (and others) are having a problem with IE7 hanging during startup. With almost literally hundreds of Plugins, most of them Microsoft or Apple or Motive Communications I could spend hours disabling, restarting, disabling more....

Does anyone know of a way to cause IE to log its startup? I could find the last or last few Plugins/AddOns to be loaded and probably focus my diagnosis...

Any other suggestions are also welcome, but random search was never a favorite of mine...

Have you looked at your web server logs?

Badotz: - I'm not serving web pages from these PCs? Or is there some hidden web server/process/service I should be checking the logs for (pathname?)?

jcimarron: - Thanx... Is there a way (I did not see a "Order by create/instantiate" option) sort this by the order the AddOn is started/created?

FWIW, since posting the question I have uninstalled a few things... AT&T Self Help (Not obviously involved, but does install a number of Smart Motive dlls), Google products (all, Earth, Toolbar, Updater), and Flashget (v1.9.6). After that, I was able to start IE7 a number of times without hanging... I've reinstalled Google Toolbar (anyone know of a way to install it without the Desktop Search widget (I know how to disable it, I do not want it installed at all)...

icandyinteractive--I do not see "the order the AddOn is started/created" either.  You can, however hide MS entries to narrow down the list.
When I made Google my default Search Engine, it just substituted the write-in line (in the same place) as the IE7 Search engine in the Toolbar.  http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=87
I am not sure if you really meant to substitute Google for the Windows Search Companion.  (Start|Search)  Even if I could, I would not want to.

icandyinteractive--
"Have any of you experience with HiJackThis?
HJT is very commonly used--sometimes too often. I do not think it will help with showing you the order in which add-ons were loaded.
But, even if your PC is not infected, it is good to run antimalware programs at least once a week.
I suggest, however, you run other antimalware programs first (such as scans with your antivirus, MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware).  Delete or Quarantine what they find.  THEN run HJT to see if any bits and pieces remain.

The order in which add-ons are loaded usually depends on when the webpage or program using each is started

OK, I exagerrated a bit..  Its not hundreds, but it is 66 (enabled, 48 non-Microsoft)
*   8 - Adobe Systems (Acrobat and Reader are both installed)
*   3 - Google Toolbar
* 14 - Motive Communications - Motive Smart Bridge?
*   2 - Spybot
*   6 - Sun Java
* 10 - Symantec (NSW 2009 installed)
*   3  - FlashGet
*   2 - Mysteries:

As I mentioned originally, I have run the following scans cleanly:
* Norton AntiVirus 2009 - Latest Updates

icandyinteractive----Let's go back to the original question.
"I (and others) are having a problem with IE7 hanging during startup"
Unless you are getting a specific error message, that often means too many programs are starting at boot.
I agree with Badotz that disabling Add Ons will either confirm they are the problem or not.  (We can discuss ways of singling out the few that may be the trouble makers if that is the problem.)
I already suggested running AutoRuns.  That will show you what is starting at boot.  Another, less comprehensive approach is to Start|Run|tye MSCONFIG |OK|Startup tab.
In either event, you want to minimize the programs starting at boot. (See section 3 of the following.)

I offer several suggestions since they often can contribute to a slow PC, which I wrote sometime ago so may include things already mentioned.
1) Disk Cleanup. There are several ways to reach it. One is Start|All Programs|Accessories|System Tools|DiskCleanUp. That will start a scan of the PC to tell you what files might be deleted or compressed. (The scan takes a while.)  I would certainly delete Temporary Internet Files, Temp files, Downloaded Program Files and probably Compress Old Files. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310312 for details.
2) Then I would run ErrorChecking. (left click on MyComputer||right click on C:\ drive icon (assuming that is your hard drive)|Tools|Error Checking. Check the box "Automatically fix file system errors". Click Start (within the error checking window). You will be told to reboot. Do so. Error checking will then run as part of the reboot. It can take a while.
3) Start|Run|type MSCONFIG|OK|Startup tab.  WinXP actually needs very few thirdparty programs (the ones you see in msconfig) to run at start. Antivirus, Firewall, Antispyware, programs associated with wireless connections such as mouse, network, etc. would be among the few.  Uncheck the box to the left of any program you feel you do not need at startup.  Click Apply.  This site will help you make decisions what you do and do not need http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php  This list is VERY helpful.
4) Run Disk Defragmenter. ((left click on MyComputer||right click on C:\ drive icon (again assuming that is your hard drive)|Tools|Disk Defragmenter|Defrag Now click Analyze) Unless the analysis shows defragmentation is not needed, proceed to run Defragment. That also takes a while.
5)  Disabling Services. This could be dangerous unless you know what you are doing.  The main reason is that some Services depend on others, and some others may depend on it.  Unless you have studied these dependencies, you may delete something needed to run what would seem to be unrelated.  (You can check Dependencies by right clicking on the name of a Service|Properties|Dependency tab.) See this reference
http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm
The Elder Greek used to be very aggressive about disabling services, but you can see from the paragraph in red at the top, he has changed his mind now.
There are many other programs that start at boot, and more info can be provided whether they should or should not be allowed to start.  But the ones that usually cause problems have been covered above.

And have you looked into Event Viewer for error messages?
Event Viewer (Start|Administrative Tools|Event Viewer). Click on "System" in the left panel. Do you see RedBall error icon(s) timestamped at the exact time the problem occurred?   If so, click on the RedBall. The first message will have some data on what the problem is, but usually it is not too easy to understand. Click the blue go.microsoft.com link.  On the next window click the link to send a report to Microsoft.    Another window should open (though it may take some time for the information in the right panel to appear) which may offer some more understandable info and maybe even a solution.

jcimarron:
Thanx for your comments...

Frankly, I havent really considered what is starting at PC Boot time (for this issue), since the PC isnt hanging during boot, and in general is performing well... I have the sysinternals tools and have run autoruns, although I like GreatIs' RegRun StartControl better; I've also used ProcExplorer to see if it could give me some ideas about the hung process. It is also worth saying that what starts at Boot time on my PC hasnt really changed for months. Yes, its a hairy long list since the PC is years old and I've been using this PC for development work, as a backup server for the "family PC farm", and as my Office PC for my various jobs... (And while diagnosing this issue, I have been uninstalling a bunch of Apps that have been installed and were currently unused. I have also been cleaning up tools that have been installed and updated/upgraded by uninstalling ALL the past versions in total and just reinstalling the latest version re-installed (An example of what I'm trying to describe is AdobeReader, I uninstalled 5 (apparent) versions of Reader and just installed Reader9 once that was all cleaned up)

And I have been reading with glee the tidbits you and others have provided... I will look into those links you provided later on, thanx!

I have NSW installed, I run (scheduled) Norton Cleanup once a week.
I am (painfully) aware of everything that starts on my PC (If you havent, you should check out Regrun, very cool tool, IMHO). I pretty much keep that under strict control.
I have Diskeeper installed... If you are aware of the tool, you then know that my disks have few, if any fragments, and properly sized MFT$ (also with no fragments). (If you're not, go check it out. They claim they were the company that wrote Disk Defrag... Whether true or not, Diskeeper runs as a service; when enabled, it continuously defrags your drives (in the background and according to a schedule you have control over). Also a very cool tool.)
I check Event Viewer regularly for "stray errors", in fact I'd used it very early in the process of my own debugging of this issue, since when I kill the hung IE7 process, it wants to send a dump to MS. The page I get to when I click on the "Help" link is something of the form "The problem you have experienced is in IE7 from Microsoft and we do not have a correction for it, follow these steps... (List of ideas like disable AddOns, run update, yada, yada, yada).

So, instead of us discussing which tool to check startup activities... Why dont you let me know why you think its what starts up with the PC reboot that is affecting the IE session started later on (when all other applications appear to be able to run fine)? I'm not saying you're wrong, just that "I" currently dont see a connection between the "PC Booting" and "IE7 hanging" later on, beyond the Network stack/connection (which is provably working)?

The PC boots, runs and performs just fine....

Its IE7 that hangs during when I start it from time to time. Almost always the first IE7 session after a fresh boot (tens of minutes after booting, so PC startup activities are surely complete) will hang.

I mentioned before that I was able to (apparently) clear up the IE7 hang by uninstalling FlashGet and Google Toolbar (Both of which had been installed for months... and FlashGet has been the same version for almost a year... Google Toolbar updates itself, so its unclear whether or not its various modules have changed over that time).

I've also compared my AddOns on my system to another system (my laptop) that seems to be running quite fine... There is no significant difference in the AddOn lists (except FlashGet, I dont use FlashGet as a download manager on my laptop).

This is why I'm trying to find a "logger", if I can log IE7 startup I can compare a "hung startup log" with a "succesful startup log" and get a better idea where the process is hanging up. Is it consistently before or after the logging of a specific AddOn.

My original question still stands... Is there a tool out there that will generate a log of IE Startup, including an ordered list of its AddOns. I'm currently guessing "No"...

Since I have been muddling around (I love technical terms, dont you?) with my PC while this question is still open, the current status "of my issue" is that the first IE7 session (a long time) after a fresh boot almost always hangs. The second (and subsequent) sessions almost never hangs. The iexplore process appears to always be "killable" now (whereas before it almost always would respond back with "Process cannot be killed because it is locked by the system").

What have I changed? With respect to IE7 AddOns, as I mentioned, I had uninstalled and reinstalled FlashGet and Google ToolBar (I'd still love to get Google ToolBar without Google Desktop Search!). With respect to the PC at large, I have "cleaned up" a bunch of installed apps; probably the only two relevant apps are Cico VPN Client and recently I had tried MagicJack (hate it by the way, but different issue. and no longer installed).

Add-ons = Sad Don.

You may have discovered the limits of IE and add-ons.

I stand by my earlier suggestion to disable ALL of them and then enabling them, one by one until you find the culprit. I don't think there is any other way.

by: jcimarronPosted on 2009-10-12 at 11:22:56ID: 25553660

icandyinteractive--More things to consider:
Proxy setting problem.
Home Page access problem.
Third party toolbar installed.  (or Yahoo companion)
Run Process Explorer http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx to see what is running when IE starts.
Uninstall/reinstall IE (follow the suggestions here  http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html )  Install IE8 if desired.
Lots more if needed.

by: jcimarronPosted on 2009-11-03 at 14:52:24ID: 25734783

Original question was primarily "Does anyone know of a way to cause IE to log its startup? I could find the last or last few Plugins/AddOns to be loaded and probably focus my diagnosis..."
Using AutoRuns and running IE with no adds-ons were among the many, many suggestions made.
Unfortunately the responses were to tell us why these suggestions would not be tried.
Sadly, since no solution was tried, it would seem this question should be closed without refund.
Lots of time lost by the responders.  Nothing lost by a Premium Service Member.
