remove / disable kb976002 Browser Choice application

As at 24/02/2010 I have just done some MS updates on a windows XP pro desktop pc.

One of the updates that got downloaded was kb976002, the Browser Choice application.

I have IE8 on the PC, I want to keep IE8, and in short I want to make NO changes.

If I click on “install later”, it tells me it will prompt me next time I boot up.

If I try to remove the update, it’s an update than cannot be uninstalled.

If I go into MSCONFIG, I can see the entry in startup, but it tells me I have to be an administrator in order to change the settings. I have tried this as local and domain administrator.

Basically I DONT WANT kb976002 ... any help to remove and disable would be appreciated.

Can you just make a shortcut to "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" and launch it directly?

If you cant uninstall the update, I would perform a system restore to before those updates were installed, then go to the WU site, and select the updates, but this one, click the + sign, and select the checkbox to "hide the update".....

Hi John
With respect that is not what I am asking ..

I did not say that IE did not work .. IE dose work, I have IE 8 already on there ..

The point is that a system restore is out of the question, so it would be a reinstall. Yes I know that I can hide b976002 if I had known is was there before it was install, but it’s on there now, and I want to remove it, not reinstall the OS.

I have tried install Opera from the install option, but I am still getting that nag popup for the Browser Choice.

I want to get rid of kb976002 "Browser Choice"

Joe
"After you have installed this software update it cannot be removed. "
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894199
"I want to get rid of kb976002 "Browser Choice""

Which is EXACTLY what the System Restore does, not from the time you first bought it, but to a time a few days ago when you installed the update...... You dont lose any installed apps/data, unless the app was done after this update.....

By doing a system restore, you would have to go back and reapply all the updates you just did, which is why I was referring to hide it, so it didnt try and reinstall again. Nothing wrong with doing that....

The reference to the exact path.. Was my understanding that if it couldnt be removed, then it might have been activating the choice when you click a custom link, so I suggested straight to the .exe.

Trust me, I do understand your question......

Hi John
If there was no restore point or I would have used it ... I am, simply trying to find a way to remove or negate the update.
Joe
I was in the same situation as you but this worked for me:

- Click Install on IE8
- Your browser will come up saying that it is already your default browser
- Close the browser choice
- It will stop bugging you now!

BUT it will stay on your desktop but that isn't too much of a problem!

Microsoft HAD to release this update due to EU laws.

Try this:

> Run msconfig.exe
> Click on the Startup tab
> Scroll down until you find the Startup Item:- browserchoice
> Untick browserchoice
> Click on Apply and then OK
> Restart your PC when asked

The browserchoice application should not startup on login in now.
Hi Spen
I tried that last night .. I can see it in msconfig, but loged in as local admin, or domain addmin, it still said i had to be logged in as an administrator.

Thanks.
Joe
Hi Hello1Friend:
I know they where forced into it.. I am not a fan of the decision . I know its only an optional one .. but it got install by mistake .. and now I need it gone :-) ...

i have tried to click on install ie .. it said ie was allready installed .. but still nagged me after a reboot ..

I then did the opera install .. and installed it ..  and after a reboot I still got the nag.

(Not sure if my  browserchoice_disable.reg suggestion will work if you are admin-restricted... but worth a try in case it does work for you).
Hi ajos1
Hey .. that seams to have done it ...  its the chairmans pc, I have been told to flatten it and start again. But that seams to have done the job, thanks.

By the way .. yester day kb976002 (Browser Choice application) was an option, today I just saw it in the high priority updates..

Joe
The moral of the tale is DO NOT INSTALL KB976002 (Browser Choice application), and set it to hidden. But this was a quick fix I do like MS, but it’s a shame they cannot make this uninstallable.
That is fine... we had the same problem as you today... it seems very crazy that it just goes around in circles...

We are preparing for the possibility of 750 pcs getting this problem... so thought we would have a look in "[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]"  as this is the place where some of the run-at-startup time programs get placed.  Thankfully it is the list... so it can be deleted.

I am hoping they will make a make an update that allows you to say you are happy with what you have got and for it to never bother you again.
Hi Ajos1
Hmmm affirmative to that ... granted I have a bias in favour of MS (that’s just me), but I don’t see why it can’t be got moved from high to option, at least then it won’t get automatically ticked for install.

Joe
I would put money on the fact that this has something to do with all the anti-trust cases against Microsoft.
Well my suspicions were right... this has just appeared in my corporate inbox ... "A Microsoft update has been issued recently in order to comply with a legal settlement with the European Commission."

So I have questions; who deceided on the list of browsers? Why does it not include ALL browsers? Why should Microsoft have any issue with only recommending its own browser? You don't expect to walk into a Mercedes car dealership and expect them to try and sell you a BMW or Lexus do you?

Microsft sell a product called Windows which has MANY INTEGRATED COMPONENTS parts such as a web browser. I like the browser. There's not much between it and any other browser. In fact all other browsers somehow just seem a bit clunky to me.

What's next? Microsoft being forced to offer different Notepad or Calculator because others are available????

If you want Safari or Firefox or Chrome just install it alongside IE... I have 7 different browsers installed on my Windows 7 PC for website development testing so what's the big problem?

All in all I think a massive waste of money on legal fees that has simply lined the pockets of a few without any benefit to the many.

Micorosft has a monopoly on the PC operating system..... well blame the PC manufacturers they are the ones who signed the delas on offer from Microsoft..... Alternatively change the rules of 'open market' to say that no one company shall preside over more than 60% market share, or somthing like that.

*** RANT OVER ***

:-)
Hi Charltp5
RANTS are never over :-)

Hmmm always new it was down to the EU settlement, not that I agree it in general or principle.

I Agreed.. I happen to like IE8 for most things, and use Opera for some other sights.  But MS have to comply, so here we are. I do think it would be nice to be able to down load an update that puts your explorer back to old school. I want to have an interactive icon on my desktop.

As for as monopolies look no further than my favourite search engine provider .. “GOOGLE”. They own sever farms, they are putting server farms on ocean going ships that can be parked anyplace, they are running their own internet, they want you to run their OS, and bowers. Just who is the monopoly again?

Joe :-)
The latest upto date info: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976002  and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2019411 .

Means the Reg File might look like:

What about whacking the lines BELOW "---SNIP-HERE---" into a text file... (ie) browserchoice_disable.reg  (Make sure there are no extra spaces at the end of each line.. as sometimes happens with webpage pasting).

Then do:-  regedit  browserchoice_disable.reg

---SNIP-HERE---
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\BrowserChoice]
"Enable"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"BrowserChoice"=-
Hi ajos1
Yahaaa way to MS, shame they could not kept it as optional.

Joe
Well this is costing the companies money. Removing the patch is about 15min work. I think companies should send the bill to EU for forcing MS to make this patch. The EU should take responsibility for this crappy law and pay up.
