The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Locate Link Browser window opens when clicking on link in emal message

Tags: browser, locate, firefox, opens
I am using Outlook 2003.  When I click on a link in an email message, a window entitled "Locate Link Browser" opens.  The system then opens Mozilla Firefox which is my preferred browser and goes to the link.  This only happens if I do ot have a session already running in Mozilla Firefox.  How do I eliminate the window other than have Mozilla running at all times?
Thanks for all your great advice and help.

Greetings mabarnes11 !

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821692
This problem occurs on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer that has a third-party browser that does not support Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE), such as Netscape Navigator and Mozilla Firefox.

To resolve this problem change the registered file type for the URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol file type to use Internet Explorer. To do this, follow these steps:
1.      On the desktop, double-click My Computer.
2.      On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the File Types tab.
3.      In the Registered File Types list, click URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol, click Advanced, and then click Edit.
4.      In the Actions box, type open.
5.      In the Application used to perform action box, locate Internet Explorer (Iexplore.exe), and then click Open.
6.      In the Application box, type IExplore, and then click OK.

Best wishes, war1

mabarnes11,

You need to make IE6 check that it is the default browser. In IE, go to Tools > Internet Options > Programs and check the box at the bottom.  In Firefox, go to Tools > Options > Main. Uncheck option to check if Firefox is default browser.

War1,
That does remove the problem but introduces another.  I do not want IExplorer as my default browser and when going to links from my email I want to use Mozilla Firefox.  How can that be set up?  What is confusing is I had no problems until yesterday.  l  have not installed any programs or made any changes to any part of the registry.  I have not opened IExplorer for months until instructed by you in the previous post.
Thanks in advance for your hlp.
Marvin

Marvin, something is not working correctly in Firefox.  Create a new Firefox profile.
http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profile

Then test.  If problem goes away, migrate your settings to new profile

Well all worked okay until I tried to migrate the bookmarks and I now have the problem back again.  Will play with the book marks and see what I can find.

One thing that is strange.  If Firefox is open the problem does not show.  If there is no Firefox open the problems comes.  If there is an IExplorer open the problem also shows.

Yes, check your bookmarks that you migrated.

War1,
I found the solution.  Nothing to do with bookmarks.  I have no idea what causes this but it is fixable by the following:

Steps to follow:
1. When the Locate Link Browser windows opens, navigate to the firefox.exe program, usually found in C:Program Files/Mozilla Firefox.
2. Highlight Firefox.exe and click OK or Open.
3. The window will close and will not reopen when you click an email link.

War1,
Found another little glitch.  After making the fixes I found at http://www.vcn.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=287 and shared above I got two windows.  To rid the second opening the following worked great.

If you make this change and either two browser windows open or a File Open dialog opens along with a browser window, then you need to remove the check from Use DDE on the HTTP protocol:
1. Open Windows Explorer (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer).
2. Click Tools, and then Folder Options.
3. Click the File Types tab.
4. Locate the HTTP protocol, labeled URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol. NOTE: if you click on the File Types column heading, the list will sort by file type. You can scroll down the list to the URL section more quickly.
5. Select it, then click Advanced. Select open and click Edit.
6. Remove the check from the Use DDE box.
7. Click OK, and then OK again.
8. Repeat steps four through 7 for the HTTPS and FTP protocols.
9. Click Close.
