I am running Mozilla thunderbird that has all of its updates. Every time that I open my sent file to look back on email that I have sent. I open a past email and I either see nothing or a bunch of letters and numbers. The emails in the inbox are opening fine. Any help would be appreciated.

Notepad says its too big of a file. Its about a 4 gig file. I'm right clicking on the sent file and opening it in nopepad. I also looked on other sites and saw a similar problem on anohter website and I followed their instructions of deleating the sent.msf and let Thinderbird recreate it. Well it recreated some of the old emails from 2006 but nothing from 2007. However you can read any of those messages. Tried sending another message and that message opens up blank. I did type a sentence in there.
1. Make a backup of the data file NOW, if you haven't already - burn it to a DVD so you know it can't possibly be overwritten. If, during your recovery attempts, you corrupt it, wouldn't it be good to know you can get it back?
2. Try other editors - EditPad Lite at www.editpadpro.com for example.
3. Create sub folders - Sent Mail 2006, Sent Mail 2005, etc. Each January, move them mail into the sub folders. It will keep the sizes more manageable and possibly prevent problems.
I've never seen the problem you're experiencing - nor have I had any problem with Thunderbird e-mail in the past. But 4 GB file sizes can be problematic for many programs - even for some file systems (FAT32 can't handle anything that large).
Do you think it would help to backup all the files in the sent. And when I get into the file just delete all of it and start a fresh sent file. From what it sounds the sent file could already be corrupted beyond repair. So maybe starting off a fresh sent file may fix that problem. I have no problems getting rid of it and starting fresh if it means it fixes it.
Like I said, backup the existing file and try it. It should work. You could even create another profile and copy the sent items folder from there to your original profile. (Note: to make another profile, you might have to rename your existing one. Then start thunderbird, and copy everything into the newly created profile EXCEPT the sent items box. NOTE: I've not done this - this is advice based on my understanding of how it works. As I said before, MAKE BACKUPS in case anything we suggest you do causes problems.
