Question

mozilla firefox and IE extremely slow opening pages

Asked by: sgiles68

Thanks in advance to everyone, your help is always greatly appreciated...   My problem of the day is my web browser, firefox is my preference, but IE is experiencing the same slow loading pages problem. I have searched ee and tried the recommended fixes I found but they all seem to be years old. Im thinking it may be system related since its occurring in both browsers.  I have also ran FF in safe mode and at first its fast but then it starts slowing to a crawl again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.... Scott

I'm assuming you have scanned for spyware, malware and virus, correct?

See http://securitytango.com/tango.php  for some steps on getting cleaned up. (Don't forget, if you skip a step doing the Tango, you are just moving, not Dancing.)

yes i run ad-aware and spybot religiously and have been running mcafee antivirus but changed to nod32 today. also disabled alot of crap on my startup after reading more recommendations on EE, no help.

Well, then let's get cracking.  Did you uninstall Mcafee from the computer, or did you simply disable it when you installed Nod32? How much RAM is on this machine?

Grab TCPView here.  http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/TcpView.mspx Once you download it and unzip it, you can just hit the tcpview.exe and it will start watching your tcp connections.  Make sure in the View that the "Show Unconnected Endpoints" is not checked, or you will get a lot of extra info.

Next we want to Download and run Process Explorer to view what is using your Processes.  http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/ProcessExplorer.mspx

Next we will need to Download and run Hijack This http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
Copy/paste the log here so we can see it. Do not Fix anything until we can get a look at your log.  This program is very powerful and can muck up your system if you start clicking and fixing without knowing what you are doing.

Sorry, sleeping yesterday.

So, mcafee appears to be fully uninstalled.

You do have Nod32 installed as an AV, correct?

Your log looks pretty good. I'm just looking into your wireless network connections.
wltrysvc.exe and
HP Wireless Assistant.exe

by: mtz1of4Posted on 2007-09-21 at 11:44:06ID: 19938033

Try disabling that HP wireless assistant and see if it helps.
From http://www.castlecops.com/s11875-hpWirelessAssistant.html
The HP Wireless Assistant is a user application that provides a way to control the enablement of individual wireless devices (such as Bluetooth or WLAN devices) and that shows the state of the radios for these wireless devices.

Hi MTZ, thanks so much for your help. removing hp assistant didnt work. I think it may be a connection issue I came home early today and its flying. i think earthlink may get overloaded at night so im thinking about swapping providers but i will let you know in a couple of days what happens. thanks again

by: mtz1of4Posted on 2007-09-26 at 13:23:07ID: 19966453

Scott,

Hmm, it could be earthlink, but  I would think a speedtest should help if you're interested.
http://www.speedtest.net/

Wireless connection, correct?

Is it a secure wireless connection or an open router? WEP or WPA encrypted?

Is this your router?  Can you connect to it's web interface and see how many others MIGHT be connected to it?  Maybe a neighbor is borrowing your bandwidth?  Maybe your machine is jumping to other networks?

Let me know how things go.

by: sgiles68Posted on 2007-09-26 at 13:57:11ID: 19966695

OK Mtz, now im dizzy, lol. all of which are valid questions i cant answer, could you help. I ran a bandwidth test and it came back around 1000kbps this was earlier in the day when things seemed to be flying. It continues to run strong at the moment. the problem apparently is in the evenings and on weekends which led me to think of earthlink being overloaded. But your questions about my network are very valid. I will post in a few minutes with router and wireless info if you dont mind helping, I dont think its a secure connection so anyone could be using it.  Thanks so much for your help, is there anyway to give bonus points?

by: sgiles68Posted on 2007-09-26 at 14:06:59ID: 19966766

speedtest.net test speeds download 1032kb/s  upload 170 kb/s. the modem is a Zyxel prestige 600 series and the wireless router is a belkin 2.4 ghz. belkin wireless utility says security is disabled

by: sgiles68Posted on 2007-09-26 at 16:53:42ID: 19967851

Hi MTZ its now 6:51 p.m central time and my upload speed is 1131 and download speed is 215 but the same pages that were flying earlier are just dragging. Its not just one page, i checked msn, google, yahoo, ebay, craigslist, etc. and they are all dragging. this is so odd.

by: mtz1of4Posted on 2007-09-26 at 17:41:51ID: 19968002

Don't worry about bonus points.

Just clarifying a few things for my own need now.
You are using the Belkin's wireless utility to control your wireless card.
OK, so you can get to your routers configuration page, good.
Did you need a password or not?  If not, the first thing to do is go and change the password.  If a neighbor or a not-so-friendly person accesses that configuration page, they can hijack your connection.

Next, just for our information, go to the router's configuration.
Look for something that says DHCP client list.  Are there multiple clients there? More then what you expect?

If so, restart router, log back in to the router configuration, double check that dhcp list, go down to wireless->Security and enable wpa, but before you do that, you may need to write down your password for the WPA because once you set that, you will not be able to reconnect to it, unless you have the password and the SSID. Also, you really need to confirm what secuirty protocol your wireless NIC will work with. Not all of them handle WPA, so if you could get me your model numbers of the router and your wireless network card, I might be able to key in on what exactly you need to do.

Do you have the book that came with your router, or maybe on it's menu?

Basically, you want to secure your network and this is what I want to help you with.

by: sgiles68Posted on 2007-10-01 at 12:00:21ID: 19993114

sorry mtz ive been ill. i am using the belkin wireless utility to control my wireless, it didnt need a password to let me in. I havent found the dhcp client list? everything with that is new to me I will try to work on securing it.

by: mtz1of4Posted on 2007-10-01 at 12:30:25ID: 19993390

oK, the belkin wireless utility isn't what  I am looking for. I was confused for a minute.  Do this for me,
got to Start and select Run
type in

cmd
and hit Enter. Up will come up that DOS window, type at the cursor

ipconfig /all

and write down the Default Gateway, should be something like
192.168.1.1
Once we have that, you can type Exit and hit the Enter key.
Open your browser, and in the Address Bar type in the default gateway number you just wrote down and hit Enter.
You should  get a Prompt asking you for a Admin Name and Password.
If you have never given it a password, it should be blank.  If you can't log in, please tell me what model number you have and I'll find the default password for you.

This should then give you the Router's configuration page where you will set up your password and security for the wireless access and you should find the DHCP List.

Let me now how it goes and please write down your password for now.

Your great MTZ, i got that working, network is secure now, but unfortunately the speed is about the same

by: mtz1of4Posted on 2007-10-02 at 13:06:19ID: 20001600

Alright,  so you set up WPA correct?

Let's take a look at the hardware, then.  How much memory in this machine?  How much cache is set aside for your browsers?  In Firefox, go to Tools->Options->Advanced->Network and find it there.  Do you clear your cache on every exit? Find that under Tools-Options->Privacy->Private Data - There might be a checkmark in the "Always clear my private data when I close Firefox", you can hit the Settings button next to that and see if Cache is also being cleared.  If it is then every time you go to a webpage, your computer has to get every bit of information for every site, so it may appear to slow down a connection.

How much Free space on your hard drive?

Is there any other wireless devices in the area that might interfere with your connection? A Microwave oven, wireless phones, (typically 2.4 ghz will interfere) baby monitors?

Will be giving this some more thought.

Have you tried plugging in to the router and testing your speed?  Or have you been running wireless continuously?

Now that  I think about it, it very well could be your router?   What speed is it rated for, do you know? If not, do you know the model number?
