It all came down to the last bit - uninstall and delete. It would have been easier to go right there from the start - but remember to write down all the embedded settings you've accumulated over the months and years of using the browser.
Good argument for using the same password across the board...

TV Guide location is remembered by cookies. Make sure you are not deleting cookies files when existing Firefox. Go to Tools > Options > Privacy tab. Make sure to UNcheck "Always clear my private data when I close Firefox"
Saving usernames and passwords is a setting in Firefox. Go to Tools > Options > Privacy. Under History, make sure all the boxes are checked.
If no joy,
1. Check if an addon is interfering. Go to Tools > Addons and disable the addons. Click OK.
If Firefox does not open, go to Start > Programs > Mozilla Firefox > Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode)
2. Check if a program running in the background is interfering. Disable firewall, antivirus, antispyware, spam blocker, and desktop programs.
3. Clear your cookies and cache files. Go to Tools > Options > Privacy tab. Under Private Data, click "Clear Now" button. Click OK.
4. If no joy, your profile is corrupt. Create a new Firefox profile

5. Run Firefox Standard Diagnostics

6. If no joy, back up your bookmarks. Uninstall Firefox and delete your Firefox profile files. Then do a clean install of Firefox.
