Forwarding is normally accomplished at the server level, rather than at the client level. Most ISPs will let you set your email address to automatically forward to another address.
That said, it can be accomplished in Tbird as well using Message Filters:
Tools menu, choose Message Filters.
Click New. Give the filter a name (like "Autoforward to Gmail").
Select "Match all messages"
For "Perform these actions", select "Forward Message To"
Enter the Gmail address in the box following.
Click OK, then close the Message Filters box.
Remember, of course, that Tbird needs to be running for this to happen. If your computer is turned off or Tbird isn't running, nothing will be forwarded. That's why doing a forward at the ISP level is generally preferable (unless you want to have copies of the email at both the original email address and the new one; a forward at the ISP level will typically mean that the message isn't saved in the original address's inbox).
Also, I just ran a quick test of this to make sure I was setting up the instructions correctly, and I noticed that the mail gets forwarded as an attachment, rather than in the main body of the email. Most people would consider that a nuisance, because the message isn't immediately visible. I don't know of a way to change that; I have forwarding set to Inline in Tbird's options.
