Netscape keeps stats on everything you do.  And Netscape publishes them to a web site ns8-stats.netscape.com  Something is wrong with this web site and it can not be found and NETSCAPE continues to try to find it.

Use notepad and edit the hosts file in the windows directory.  For Windows XP :  C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts  and add "127.0.0.1 ns8-stats.netscape.com" to the end of the file, here is a example of what it should look like after adding the line:

127.0.0.1       localhost
127.0.0.1       ns8-stats.netscape.com

Save the file and restart the your computer.  This has solved the problem for me until Netscape corrects the the web site.  Or hopefully provides a fix that will handle when this site is down.

rtholder,

1. Check if a plugin is interfering. Disable Google Toolbar and other plugins

2. If no joy, clear your cache and cookies files.

3. If no joy, reset the browser to default settings.

4. If no joy, create a new Netscape profile. Trick Netscape into creating a new profile by activating my Windows guest account. since this has never been used, there was no user profile for Netscape.

5. Reinstall Netscape browser.

Might also benefit by checking any scheduled tasks; some background application or interface may have instructions to check for updates, to register something, scan for something, etc.  Perhaps a time-clock or ticker interface.  The possibilities are many, but this could be an additional avenue to explore.

rtholder, any update?

Yes,
This was a bug that effected every person running Netscape 8.1.2 and a fix has been posted on Netscape's forum.  Follow this link and download the fix:

http://community.netscape.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?tsn=1&nav=messages&webtag=ws-nscpbrowser&tid=6849

Here is a cut & paste of the message with the fix:

**************************************************************************************************************
As has been reported, the current lockup problem is caused by failed http calls to  ns8-stats.netscape.com  in the performance monitoring code in NS8.....

......so attached is a fixed up version of browser.jar, that has all such calls commented out.

Note: This fix is for NS 8.1.2 Only  an  8.1 fix will follow.....

To install:-

   1. Exit NS8

   2. Backup the original NS8   browser.jar  file in your:-
             c:\program files\Netscape\Netscape Browser\chrome     folder

   3. Download the one attached here to this folder.

   4. Rename this new one to  browser.jar

If you have any problems, just put the original one back.

While testing, I'm sure NS8 seems to load much faster now this call home code is missing....
********************************************************************************************************************

The fix I posted to the host file is the way I am going to keep it.  I selected to opt out in the iinstall process of Netscape for sending stats but it seems they were doing it anyway.  And when the site went down, all Netscape 8.1.2 had problems and let the cat out of the bag that they were collecting info even if you said no during the install.

War1 and Asteac,
Thanks for the suggestions, but I had already confirmed the problem and found a fix.  I wanted to posted it so maybe I could prevent anyone else spending as much time as I did on things that were not the problem. I have not had a chance to learn how this site works other than posting a question, so I am not sure how to close this with me answering my on question, and I also have not been able to find how to look at other people's questions to see if I can help!

I answered my question myself. What do I do?
Post a request in the Community Support topic area asking for a refund, and asking the Moderators to close the question; be sure to post the URL to your question. You will be required to post your solution in your original question. A Moderator will post a notice of your request which will give the participants four days to object to the refund. Note that if it resembles one of the suggested comments, the likelihood is that your request will not be granted, but rather, the points will be awarded to the Expert who makes the suggestion.

Meant to include this specific answer to your question in the above, overlooked.
