I ticked this box, assuming that in future all .EXE files would just download into my selected directory. This is not the case! Instead it downloads it and opens it.
This only happens with .EXE files. Other files, such as .ZIP, are fine.
Although I can right click on the file and do a 'Save Target As...' I would like to have the old functionality back. Any idea how I would go about doing this?
Or even just download the file into my selected directory without asking ANY questions?

The solution to your problem is as follows:
RE\Classes \.exe" and
Start the registry editor ("regedit"). Go to the branch called
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWA
change the entry "EditFlags" to "00 00 00 00". From now on
Internet Explorer will prompt you what to do when you click on
an .exe file.
Hope this helps.
