Does it freeze up every time? or just occasionally.  I've had problems with Windows 98 freezing up as well, at all sorts of times.  It might work in Outlook (not Express).

When you post a message in ALL CAPS, this is considered YELLING in the online community. Please turn the caps lock off. :)

Just about all of the error messages you cited here can be attributed to video card issues. it may be that your video card needs an updated driver.

To diagnose this, do the following.

1. Turn down your color depth in Control Panel/Display/Settings.

2. Turn down your graphics hardware acceleration, all the way in
Control Panel/System/Performance tab/Graphics button.

3. Use the default mouse pointers nothing animated or in color.

Once this is done, reboot the computer and try the stationery or some other graphic intensive operation to test it.

If any of these steps help improve the display or stop the errors, then it will confirm an issue with the video card.

Let me know what you find.

Hi--I'm very sorry, I didn't know that all capitals was yelling..
Where and what are my default mouse pointers?
I will try to do the things you said and get back to you.
One of the things that bothers me is that this stationary used to work , but now it doesn't..huh
Thankyou for your help.
Sharon Andres

by: JoeVPosted on 2000-08-19 at 22:52:58ID: 3996826

Sharon

The mouse pointers aren't critical. The main thing is lowering the hardware acceleration. This moves the job of most of the display work away from the installed video card and over to the CPU.

by: 88harleyPosted on 2000-08-20 at 08:51:07ID: 3998935

Hi---I did what you said and my stationary
works really good..I sent 8 examples to myself.
I did get one illegal operation, but it did not freeze
my computer up..I haven't set the settings
back to what they were, but I will..
byee for now

by: JoeVPosted on 2000-08-20 at 09:19:53ID: 3999126

Sharon

Remember, this is just diagnosing the problem. If these changes in the display and hardware acceleration settings fixes the problem, then it indicates a need to find updated drivers for the installed video card.

Let me know.

It sounds as though JoeV has been instrumental in getting you through the major roadblocks of your initial question.  You must tell us what your video card type and model is to get the correct drivers or update links for you.  Many standard drivers are included on the Windows 98 cd/disk, and many are available via updates from the manufacturer's site.

As regards your other question, "how do I earn more points for questions", there are surveys you can take to get points that experts-exchange posts, you may also ask that question for zero points in the Customer Support area.

If you've got your Windows 98 system updated with free fixes and enhancements, using WindowsUpdate, then I assume you also have the most current version of DirectX.  I'd recommend that if you've got version 7.0 or later, you run the diagnostics to determine what your needs may be, what drivers are needed, what problems you have in regard to multimedia in general.  Here's how.

start
run
msinfo32
tools
DirectX diagnostics.

Run all the tests and read the details that result.  You can also save these results as a text file for later review and/or cut/paste key questions here about the specific result(s).

Goodmorning:
I have done alot of searching and looked for my video card and what type it is. You can get cards from 12.00-4,000.00 depending on the purpose..
I have found out that if I downloaded explorer 5.5 without turning off the antivirus and any download assistants that I will probably get a faulty installation of Internet Explorer and Outlook express..
My question is--How do make sure these are turned off before I download Internet Explorer 5.5 again?

start - run - msconfig.  UNCHECK all items related to your unnecessary programs, including viruscan to bypass.  This would be from any of your startup files that may be loading them, and then when done, reboot.  I'd check the autoexec, config, the INI files to uncheck any load = and run = statements and uncheck everything in your startup group EXCEPT your power management items, systray and explorer.

Then reboot.  Also, as said, you can also use ALT+CTRL+DEL to make sure that after you're back in Windows that you uncheck everything except systray and explorer.

This question has been open for some time, and we are now embarking on new issues.  It is customary within this forum to keep us updated on the specific issue for which the question was created and to then award points and grades to the comments which best helped you.  Then one creates new questions with values for new problems.  If you check my own user ID and profile via double click on my name, you'll notice that I've received much help here and have appreciated it by keeping people updated and getting closure on specifics before going to new problems.

Thanks.

You will also benefit, Sharon, when you post your new question regarding video cards, to select the correct topic area.  You'll note by visiting the HOME link you can expand and see all categories and/or select to see them all alphabetically.  By doing so, you will post applicable questions in the applicable topic areas.  Often, using the Operating System topic area that you use is of a more general nature and you'll find more expertise there than in the Browser area; although like many, I cover multiples of topic areas.  You'll also note there is one for computer hardware, and so on.

Thankyou for your answer on how to earn points.
I did go and download Directx 7a, but it didn't realize a difference in my stationary.
I also ran all the diagnostics and everything seemed fine.
Here is what I found when looking for my video card. I was out of time this morning when I was talking to you, I had to go to work.
Device-C-media Audio Direct Sound Driver
Divice-ID-PCI\Ven_13F6DEV-0111SUBSYS_011113F6
Driver Name-OMAUDIO.VXD
Version-4.06.00.1087
Other Files-cmaudio.vxd
Provider-c-media
Windows 98 second edition update Q239887
Also when I was in diagnostics it said that I have 94MB Ram and have used 92MB. Is my computer to full? Would this affect my stationary?
I will try and keep my questions separate and to the point.
If I start-run-msconfig and uncheck things is it possible to wreck things as I'm new at this.
Thankyou for your help

msconfig is non-destructive, more so than using sysedit or any alternative process.  You can quickly and easily recheck and reboot to get things back to where you had them.

Here are links for more information on the tools, and how to create a Clean Boot for troubleshooting Windows 98 and for W98 Second Edition.

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q192/9/26.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0

I also highly recommend the next link, Sharon, it gives you excellent insight into the W98 tools and how to use them and more hyperlinks for fuller understanding.

I opt to use my Office 2000 (Word program) within my Outlook 2000 to provide me the ultimate in tools and controls in terms of stationary, etc.

Good Morning:
I do think you have hit the nail on the head when you say to go to start-run-msconfig.
I went to there and there are 33 things in there and I do not know which ones are power management..explorer doesn't seem to be there unless it is in some kind of code.
I unchecked things I thought were not needed for power and such and then I couldn't run it..
I did type our everything that was in there, but it didn't send it.
These are the ones I unchecked,taskbar display,reminder,lomon98.exe,country selections,c-media mixer,my comet cursor,time sink ad client,still image monitor,real tray,lomon98.exe,real download
shortcut to image catcher exe.artec scan
Are any of these important to my re-downloading internet explorer and ourlook express 5.5?

Hi--Just to add the ones I left checked..They are MSMSGS, real jukebox systray, scan registry,task monitor,system tray,load power profile,critical updates,instant access,register drop handler,load power profile,scheduling agent
register drop handler, mopy points collecter, windows startup, lomega watch, lomega startup options, lomega disk icons, refresh, load=,run=.
Are there any here that I should uncheck?
Thankyou for your help.
Sharon

by: astaecPosted on 2000-09-14 at 10:13:42ID: 4306197

Msmsgs has do do with MSN Messenger, Real Jukebox is self-explanatory, scanregistry I would leave running, as I would task monitor, system tray and the 2 power profiles; the others I would uncheck, reboot and see.

I've had problems with some of the Iomega Tools packages, so check their sites for updates to whatever tools from Iomega and drivers you use.

I'm sorry to be losing track of successes on this thread.  I thought that JoeV had already helped you fix the initial problem you posted in this question; and that was the stationary.

Hi--yes I'm still searching for a reason that my stationary doesn't work. I should say some works and some doesn't. I did download internet explorer 5.5 and I think you are right..I got a faulty download.
I will try this msconfig and see what happens after I re-install internet explorer.
Thanks for your patients and help.

I've searched again through the Microsoft Knowledge Base and have not found any other items there or on the IE forums that replicate or address your intermittent stationary problem, sorry.

Did the readme.txt file help you any?

Does WindowsUpdate, product catalog say you need updates not yet installed?

HI- Thankyou for your help. One thing I thought about is that maybe I have downloaded something that clashes with something else. eg windows media player and real download.
I have read the readme and haven't found anything that might help.
I also have been to the windows update and downloaded all the critical updates.
I re-installed internet explorer 5.5 and it didn't seem to make a difference..some of my stationary works and some doesn't.
If I think of anything else that might work I will let you know.
Thanks again for all your help.

This is a very old unresolved question, please update us on your status in terms of the initial need and recommendations.  You have just posted another question in the Browser area which I've responded to.  If this is the same system, what has led up to the problem you now have?  What did you install new or what changes did you implement?

Do you have/use Web TV?

Black Screen with Error Message Running WebTV for Windows

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q190/2/27.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0

---

Or perhaps ...When you run a DirectX-based program, your monitor may display a black screen or may display only wavy lines on a black background.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the DirectX-based program changes the default refresh rate your display adapter sends to the monitor.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

Change the refresh rate.

Reduce the hardware acceleration of your display adapter.

Change the Refresh Rate
In Windows 95, display adapter drivers generally do not offer the capability to change the display adapter's refresh rate setting. Consult the display adapter's documentation or manufacturer for information about how to change the refresh rate and check for the availability of updated drivers that support this capability. Some third-party vendors also offer programs with this capability.

In Windows 98, you can change the refresh rate using the Display tool in Control Panel. To do so, follow these steps:

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

Double-click Display, click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced.

Click the Adapter tab, and then click Adapter Default in the Refresh Rate box.

Click OK when you are prompted to test the setting.

If the setting is displayed correctly, click Yes to keep the setting.

If you still have problems when you attempt to run the DirectX-based program, consult the video adapter's documentation or manufacturer to determine the correct refresh rate setting for your monitor. If this does not work, try reducing the hardware acceleration for the video adapter.

Reduce the Hardware Acceleration
NOTE: If you change the hardware acceleration setting, the overall graphical performance may be reduced. To reduce the hardware acceleration setting, follow these steps:

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

Double-click System, click the Performance tab, and then click Graphics.

Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to one notch from the left (the Basic setting), click OK, click Close, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.

Good morning, Sharon.

Since I believe that your two issues are related, I've posted updates to your other question, but won't bother reiterating them here.  That includes the updated drivers from atitech, the web-tv criteria and other roadblocks that may well have been instrumental in both issues.

Inasmuch as your problems on the two open items may still be related, will post the recommendations here for you as well.  This, in the event you are not receiving Email updates for these items.

Indentally, when you said "I also went to the site regarding my driver, but I was all greek to me. The error I had was WMPUI.DLL 1,134.864 06/26/00 7:45a
I don't know what to do with this information. " .... this is dll is installed in the default Windows directory and is a part of the Windows Media Player.

When I've had problems recently with the most current Media Player (version 7.0), I did the following to resolve them:

Went to Windows Update.  Checked product catalog.  Windows Media Player was not listed as needed, so I then asked to show all installed items.  Once there, I used the UNINSTALL option for Windows Media Player.  It was uninstalled and I then rebooted.  After a reboot, and the registry was properly updated and cleared of the residual problems that the prior Media Player version 7.0 had, I went back to Windows Update and Product Catalog again.  Then chose to download and install the new Windows Media Player.  Although both the earlier and subsequent versions were 7, the actual newer download and install had a more current base number under version and it has been running flawlessly ever since.  Again, after the process, a reboot to ensure the registry is properly updated.

This worked for not only myself, but a few others who were encountering somewhat related issues as you had.

Without a question, the tools found in Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition are superiod to prior Windows version support tools, so I will include the link here for you.  It has proven to be an invaluable tool for us.

Hi Asta:
I will go and uninstall the windows media player and reboot then reinstall and reboot. I can't do a scandisk without c-alt-del and ending everything, but explorer and systray. I did that last night and this morning I tried to run the defrag and when I came home from work 4 hours later it was still at 1%. Why is this?
I also looked through the info about tools and will persue that alot more. Bye for now

Hi Sharon.

Based upon your new comments, I would recommend changing priorities.

*  First, I would close down all things that are running through their normal close processes.

* Then I would check via Alt+Ctrl+Del what is running and End Task on everything but Systray and Explorer.

* Right click a blank spot on your desktop, choose properties and screen saver and choose None for screensaver (turn off completely).

* If you use FindFast, make sure you stop it, it causes great problems in terms of many applications and system processes I've used.

* Then from the Accessories menu, choose system tools and Maintenance Wizard.  I would configure it so that my system is tuned the best it can be and all my junk files are removed.  Configure Cleanup, Scandisk and Defrag.

* Immediately after modifying your settings in the above, you can program this maintenance process to run regularly and at specific times/dates.

* After Scandisk and Defrag have been run, I'd reboot.

* Also in your Browser clear your history and temporary internet files (cache) regularly and before you try and troubleshoot other issues.

* Now I would connect to the network and WindowsUpdate and take the actions outlined earlier to uninstall/reboot and reinstall/reboot the Windows Media player using that routine so that you get the updated level browser that just worked for me yesterday.

The first 10% appear to take the longest, depending on how fragmented your disk(s) are.  However, if nothing else is running in the background, such as outlined above, or viruscan or live desktop updates, etc.... this process should not take that long.  Although, stranger things have happened, when people have allow some strange power management thing to occur from the BIOS or the like, OR if you had a really huge 40GB hard drive.  Nothing surprises me these days.

Hi Asta:
How do I find out if I have a huge 40 GB hard drive?

Explore your computer and click the drives you have one at a time, there'll be a number that gives you total capacity and another that tells you what the free space is.  This you can do by right-clicking the My Computer icon on your desktop and choosing Explore.

Another way to see the overview quickly is this way:

start - run - msinfo32 .... details will be there as well.

Good morning, Sharon.

This is quite a lengthy troubleshooting thread, and new issues continue to arise.  What is your plan with this question?  Typically, when I've had issues that I've posted in a question and others arise, I've posted new ones for the new problems and recommend that highly.

Thanks for your update and ideally, closure on this item.

Hi Asta:
I have been able to run my scan disk , but I have to stop all things writing to my drive. I didn't have to do that before. Next I can't do the defrag. After 5 hours it has only done 1%.I have cleared my cookies, emptied my sent files and deleted files, recycle bin. I am not sure how to delete the history in my browsers. I will keep trying to do the defrag. One time I watched it off and on until it was finished and I had alot of blank spots.
Bye for now

Within Internet Explorer, do this:

Tools - Internet Options - General tab, Delete Temporary Internet Files, also check delete offline content... then clear the History.  Then again do what was recommended to run maintenance, stopping all screen savers, findfast, background viruscan, etc.

Sometimes, it helps to run defrag in SAFE MODE when nothing else can run.  That's also an alternative to try.

by: astaecPosted on 2000-10-30 at 07:15:18ID: 4982541

start - run - msconfig.  You can also uncheck items in your start up folder to stop them from running while you do the maintenance run .... that all except systray and explorer.

Do you have Power Management running from control panel that turns your monitor and hard disk off?  If so, for now, change those settings to never until you can get through the thorough maintenance run and defragment your disks.

I will include links to the Microsoft Knowledge Base that explain how the Optimizer works; and more about defrag.  It is very helpful to determine how your much-used programs are optimized, which to include/exclude if you choose and just in general more information to help you be self-sufficient in these endeavors.

Description of the Disk Defragmenter Tool in Windows 98

Appears to Hang at 10 Percent
In Windows 98, Disk Defragmenter typically runs an optimization process during the first 10 percent of the defragmentation process. The time that the process takes depends on the number and size of programs to be optimized. It may appear like your computer is hung. If you have previously run Disk Defragmenter without an issue and then converted to FAT32 and are now having an issue, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Again, success!  Good news.

You should close this question and begin another one, Sharon.  We have resolved things all along the way and the problem with continuing this is that once it is finally closed and migrates to where it should be, the PAQ, then whoever purchases this question will have everything under the sun to pursue.

Thanks.  Even though you close a question, you may still be able to post follow-ups.

Yesterday I noticed that WindowsUpdate has a new IE application to help troubleshoot and escalate issues.  It only took me 3 minutes to download, so you may also benefit.  Check it out using WindowsUpdate.  Here is a synopsis from that Readme file.

Download Internet Explorer Error Reporting and contribute to the development of Internet Explorer browser technology. With Error Reporting installed, when an application fault occurs you will now see a new dialog box that gives you the opportunity to report the problem to Microsoft. If an update or workaround is available for the error you have reported, you are directed to the appropriate Web site to download the update or view instructions for the workaround.
System Requirements
·      Internet Explorer 5.0
·      Internet Explorer 5.01
·      Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 1
·      Internet Explorer 5.5
How to use

If you encounter a critical error, such as application faults or illegal operations, you are given the option to see the error in a data report. You can either view the data yourself by clicking on the Technical Information link, report the error to Microsoft, or close the message box and continue browsing.
How to uninstall
To uninstall Internet Explorer Error Reporting quickly and easily using Windows Update:
1.      Go to the Product Updates page.
2.      Be sure to click Yes if a message prompt appears.
3.      When the Product Updates page appears, click the Show Installed Updates button at the top of the page.
4.      Click the Uninstall button to the right of the Internet Explorer Error Reporting description.
To uninstall the Internet Explorer Error Reporting when you are not online:
1.      Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2.      Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3.      Select Internet Explorer Watson.
4.      Click Add/Remove.
You must restart your computer to complete the uninstall.

Try this, Start - run - sfc.

Let System File Checker check your system files (dll) for integrity.  You can customize the settings there to include showing you dll's (system files) that have been changed as well.  I use those settings to manually decide on issues such as if a older file replaced a newer one.  If that were the case, I would use that function to restore it.  In fact, have your Windows 98 disk/CD handy if restore is needed, or advise problems found.  I'll be right back.

by: astaecPosted on 2000-10-31 at 11:29:09ID: 5007890

This mshtml.dll should be the same version as the current version of IE.  If this SFC process doesn't fix it, I would try the IE Repair Tool.
