Question

VPN problem: Create Socket Failed 10048. Failed to open a socket. Unable to try connection

Asked by: hirenvshah

Hello,

Thanks for reading this.

I use the Nortel VPN client to dial in to a network. Everything was working fine except that since last week I get this error upon trying to connect:

Create Socket Failed with 10048.

Upon clicking OK, it further says:

Failed to open a socket. Unable to try connection. Click connect to try again

--

I also use the Windows 2000 VPN to dial in to yet another network and that is working fine.

And ideas?

Hiren

The 10048 means address in use. The socket address (I/P address) is already being used. I don't know the Nortel product. Does it use any fixed socket addresses?

Something changed last week when this error popped up.  Did you make any configuration changes, install or uninstall anything?  Is your system updated with fixes/patches with WindowsUpdate?  Have you checked with the Nortel site to see if anything pertinent to you has been noted in terms of patches/fixes?

Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections from a Windows 2000 client may stop working after the computer resumes from Hibernate or Standby mode if the Incoming Connections option is enabled.  More about this in the MS KB link below:

Run MSCONFIG and disable CVPND in the startup tab.  This will allow you to run Contivity client until you are ready to run the Cisco client.  To run Cisco client, go to C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\VPN Client and run CVPND.  You will have to re-boot after this to run the Contivity client again.

The better fix would be for the VPN providers to agree on standards so that they will not get in each other's way.

Personally, I feel like I've (we've) been talking to myself (ourselves) here, and don't like wasting my (our) time or that of the person asking the question, so going to log off and "assume" I've (we've) helped.

Putting out a sign that says "GONE FISHING", much like the Asker of this question appears to have done.
