Netscape 4.x and Nested Tables

I am developing a website that works in Mac IE and NS and in PC IE and NS 6.0 and greater.

Because of the design and cut of the graphics (I am not the designer), I felt it necessary to use nested tables. It was either that or use very complex colspans and rowspans. Anyway, there are some funky things going on with the layout/overall look of the site on NS 4.x.

My question is: When you are coding nested tables (4 deep is the farthest it goes) does indenting of code badly affect the cellspacing in NS 4.x? It seems some of the cells have a few extra pixels beteen them. I would rather not put a whole nested table on the same line of code if it is avoidable.

Also I am using a few images as backgrounds to span to the widths of the cells (designer's image cuts of 1 px). Can this effect table cells popping out etc.?
