Question

How to force the "remember password" feature to activate in IE

Asked by: QBasic

This is just curiousity more than anything, hence small number of points.

Go to http://www.network54.com/Login/

At seemingly random times, when I fill in Login name and Password, I am prompted to see if I want to save the information.

I have three userids. For two of them, I have received that prompt (eventually) and I answered "yes". So when I get the screen and double-click in the Login Name field, I get a list of two accounts. If I pick one, it fills in the userid/password correctly for the one I picked and logs me in successfully.

However if I want to log in with my third userid, I always have to manually fill in userid/password and I never get prompted whether I want to save it.

(Whew! Sorry for the long speech.)

My Question: What can I do to get prompted?
I have WindowsNT and Microsoft IE

Mac,
Enable autocomplete in the 3rd user.  With IE open, go to Tools > Options > Content > Autocomplete.  Check "Username and password. Click OK. Ok. Close all browsers.

Boo-hoo, sob, ...

I already had done that. It probably accounts for why the other two got set. That's the mystery.

1. There may be programs running in the background interfering with the operation of Internet Explorer. If you have Norton programs running in the background, temporarily turn them off, including anti-virus, win doctor, recycle bin protect, and clean sweep. Does this fix the problem?

Turn off any firewall or ad-blocker.

2. Perform a repair of Internet Explorer.

Well, I figured out that the "seemingly random" I referred to is not random.

By experimenting with new userids, I determined that when you FIRST ENTER a userid/password, you are given the opportunity to save the password.

If you elect "Yes", then the userid/password is saved and you appear on the password list thereafter.

If you elect "No" then the userid is saved, but the password is not. You do not appear on the password list; however, you are never given the opportunity to save again.

I am certain that if, on the tools/InternetOptions/Content/AutoComplete menu, I select "Clear Passwords" then I will start over and have no problem entering all three userids. However, I have many forms here and there with saved passwords and I hate to start over.

So my original question, rephrased with new found knowledge is:

I have AutoComplete working correctly, but in response to the AutoComplete prompt "Do you want Windows to remember...", I selected "No". However; I did not select "Don't offer to remember any more passwords".

Now I can remember passwords for new accounts, but I changed my mind on the account I responded "No" to. However, I am never prompted again. It seems like once you say "No", you can never change your mind to "Yes"

How can I get IE to forget this particular account and let be respond "Yes/No" again the next time I log on.

[Points increased to 150, as this is more interesting than I thought, even though I suspect there will never be an acceptable answer because there is no way it can be done but no proof it cannot be done. An authoritative reference (to Microsoft, etc.) that clearly says that single accounts cannot be modified will be considered a good answer]

I tried clearing all passwords via AutoComplete.

Now all passwords need to be entered every time!

How do I force IE to give me the prompt for saving password for accounts with a cleared password?

Reable Autocomplete password.

Or use a third party program like Roboform

Well, I figured this out myself and as a by-product figured out the random prompt phenomenon.

First I cleared the passwords via the AutoComplete screen and cleared history for forms and rebooted, hoping all memory was gone.

Assume my userid is Apple1.

I entered Apple1 and password and DID NOT GET THE PROMPT. Rats! Failure!

But on a hunch I entered Bple2 and backspaced to correct to Apple1. GOT THE PROMPT!

Evidently the userid is remembered, whether or not passwords are cleared. But it is remembered keystroke at a time! By entering another way, I got the prompt again. (whew!)

The random phenomenon that I encountered in the past was evidently because I made an error and corrected it, thus confusing the lookup.

I will leave this up for a while to see if anyone can improve on the system. I tried, for example, to delete one userid from the list by highlighting it and pressing delete. It deleted OK. I was unable to get the prompt back for that userid no matter how I entered it. :-(
