Question

Cannot Change Security Settings

Asked by: GivenRandy

All of a sudden, without doing anything, I cannot change my security settings. My system might have had something "pushed" to it, but a re-install of IE6 did not correct it. I get error messages like "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly." and "When you send information to the Internet, it might be possible for others to see that information. Do you want to continue? [checked]In the future, do not show this message." On the latter, I click Yes, but it keeps coming back. I cannot change the security settings (both "Custom Level" and "Default Level" are grayed out).

Use this registry patch

http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/RepairTabs.reg
1) Restores the missing Tabs in IE (usually spyware related)
2) Unlocks the grayed-out Home Page section
3) Removes the Administrator message in Internet Options

After patching the registry, these are a MUST:

Download Ad-Aware from here:
http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download/
Install, UPDATE and run.
You may need to reboot and run again to clean all the nasties that cannot be deleted at once (“in use”).

Also excellent is SpyBot Search & Destroy available here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download
Install, UPDATE and run.
You may need to reboot and run again to clean all the nasties that cannot be deleted at once (“in use”).

Even if Ad-Aware and SpyBot S&D are similar, they do clean different things. You should have both of them and use REGULARLY.

You can also install “preventive” software that will help you control these nasties:

SpywareBlaster:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Avoids malicious Active X installs.
Advantage: no system resources used!!!
Just download, install and UPDATE.

SpywareGuard:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
Monitors for attempts to install malicious software.

All of them extremely useful but you must keep them UPDATED.

I tried the REG, but it did not seem to correct anything (although it loaded successfully). We have an in-house anti-virus that seems to work. Always keep current with updates from Microsoft.

by: blue_zeePosted on 2004-04-14 at 10:40:45ID: 10825805

You mean anti-virus from Microsoft??

Or not exactly?

This is important: what is the exact name of your AV software?

Try also Ad-aware and Spybot S&D.

I think it is Computer Associates Antivirus (this is at work). Basically transparent to us.

I use Spybot S&D at home and 86-something-or-other.

Still doesn't fix this problem, though, does it?

by: GivenRandyPosted on 2004-04-14 at 12:04:10ID: 10826661

p.s., I cannot select "Custom Level".

Did you by any chance run SpyBot's Immunize feature?

If so, you can unlock by unchecking the option to "Protect IE Control Panel"

by: GivenRandyPosted on 2004-04-15 at 06:33:13ID: 10832953

I installed SpyBot on my work machine. The option was already unchecked. No apparent difference, except now I have a toolbar that I cannot get rid of!

by: GivenRandyPosted on 2004-04-15 at 06:40:58ID: 10833015

Now, I cannot get rid of MyWebSearch (using Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs) because it fails, because of my original problem. Now, I am worse off than when I started.

Download, unzip and run (click FIX):

CoolWebShredder
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

Using ToolbarCop to remove the unwanted Toolbands, Toolbar icons and Browser Helper Objects
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/toolbarcop.htm

Those should take care of your problem.

After an hour of fooling with it, I got it back to the original flawed state. Going to request that this question be deleted -- do not want someone else going down this path.

Sorry, but you must be mistaken.

Nothing in this thread would lead you to the problems you had, unless some malware, spyware or the likes is installed in your system.

But do ask for a deletion, you certainly know how to do it.

Cheers,

Zee

by: GivenRandyPosted on 2004-04-15 at 08:07:09ID: 10833784

Uh, let me see. I installed Spybot and it caused the MyWebSearch immediately (nothing else was done). Had to waste time undoing it. Hmm, seems like cause-and-effect to me.

>But do ask for a deletion, you certainly know how to do it.

Yep. I delete wasteful and unhelpful threads, especially ones with an attitude. Too bad its not like the good ol' days where 50 points would get a correct answer. Now, 250 points just gets attitude. Inflation....

I have asked for a deletion.

by: blue_zeePosted on 2004-04-15 at 08:17:00ID: 10833882

>>I installed Spybot and it caused the MyWebSearch immediately (nothing else was done)<<

I am sorry but that just is not possible. Spybot S&D is one of the best and most widely used anti-adware software available. And it DOES NOT install any kind of nasty software.

One thing is sure, you do have some kind of CWS variant, hijacker or even malware.

SpywareBlaster is one of the best if not THE best as preventive software.

Maybe you would like to spend a few minutes of your time reading this thread:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/Browser_Issues/Q_20945897.html

Anyway, take care.

It sure looks to me like the collaboration effort has continued here, no?

One-sided conversation does not qualify as collaboration.

The Browser Helper Object noted above (among others) mwsBar .... appear to cause a great deal of problems on a simple google query here:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=mwsBar&btnG=Search
and considered Spyware by a number of applications out there such as shown here:
http://www.kephyr.com/spywarescanner/logarchive/61.phtml
There are many free and fee tools out there, Zee has shared quite a few of them with you.  Here's another
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm

I don't want any points here, just also want to support Zee here, he gives so much and works so hard for end-users and I find it bothersome when our "free" time is spent helping and get into "attitude" issues.

Thanks,
Asta
