Lewis,
This seems to becoming common out there. This method takes about fifteen minutes and can rule out quite a few things in addition to possibly correcting the issue.
Note: For future usage please install these utilities on your system so that you can get to them in the future. Some of the malicious code being written now prevents internet access sometimes and thus doesn't allow you to retrieve these tools from the internet. Good luck. David
1)Clear your IE cache and temp files.
2) Run in this order updated versions of SpyBot and AdAware. Utilize the "immunize" feature on SpyBot after you have scanned.
3) Reboot your pc. Run SpyBot once again.
4) Insure that your home page is set to the desired location.
5) Launch IE to test.

cehck these entries, and click on FIX CHECKED !
reboot and now check for the problem !!!

by: lewis171Posted on 2004-06-12 at 08:25:51ID: 11295893

Both sugested approaches seemed to have fixed the problem, however,  everytime I reboot the system, sp.html sees to creep back in?? The
only way I was able to stop it was to run ad-aware's ad-watch on boot up and have it block this stuff!!
Two other things have surfaced which may or may not be problems;

    1) When I rub Search and Destroy, I keep getting DSEXPLOIT as a known problem. I do a fix and
          it seems to reurn.

    2) Occasional I see a "virtual Memory Low" message come up. It doesn't seem to present any
performance problems but it does surface from time totime.

Should i be concerned about these or should I ignore

1) I will run Hijacj in Safe Mode and fix o8 and O13, correct?

2) I will run Spybot , cwshredder and Ad-Aware in Safe mode, correct

3) By restrictions in IE Administrator do you mean changing in Internet Options, Advanced,
to uncheck the box "enable third part browser extension" ?

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2004-06-12 at 11:12:16ID: 11296487

1) No u will run Hijackthis in Normal Mode !!!

2) Yes u will run these tools in safemode !!!!

3) Any type of restrictions that can RESTRICT anyone to alter the options of IE !!!!

by: lewis171Posted on 2004-06-12 at 11:21:31ID: 11296528

I alread ran Hijack in Safe mode, should I rerun in normal mode?

The only thing I did was uncheck the box I indicated above. I also checked the  box in IE Tweaks in Spybot S&D that says "Lock Hosts file read only as protection against hijackers". Should I then fix the above two O6's?,

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2004-06-12 at 11:24:42ID: 11296549

>> I alread ran Hijack in Safe mode, should I rerun in normal mode?

U still have three entries which shud be fixed, so better u run it again in normal mode and fix them !!!!!
If u have spybot S&D options checked for IE, then perhaps its being pointed out in LOG file, leave those two Restrictions entries !!!!

I did everything you instructed me to do. The only thing that comes up the the DSEXLOIT thing. I look at the source objects (4 of them in the registry and the contents should be1004!=W=3, but it appears to be empty??)

May i ask where it is coming :-?

by: lewis171Posted on 2004-06-12 at 12:56:17ID: 11296827

When I run Spybot in Safe Mode, I get:

DSO Exploited
  {expanded]

   Data Source Object Explout
     HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0\1004!=W=3

   Data Source Object Explout
     HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0\1004!=W=3

   Data Source Object Explout
     HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0\1004!=W=3

  Data Source Object Explout
     HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0\1004!=W=3

But yet when I look in the registry, 1004 has no value in it?

I think I'm okay now. Thanks for all your help. I split the points on the question but in
retrospect should have awarded more to you.

When last question when you have a chance. That thread I alluded to talked about
not being concerned about the  DSO Exploit bug provided you've "Microsoft patched your system with current updates" are they referring to XP updates or IE updates? How do you determine if you're current?

Thanks again for all your help

Well if u will go here >> http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
Microsft will search ur system, and will tell u that what are the updates available for ur system, u can choose from there and can install them :)

To prevent it in the future this free app (with a donation will stop this from happening.)
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html

The other javacool software Spywareblaster will close the IE holes until, Microsoft releases a  fix them.

Hope this helps.

Regarding turning off System Restore when fixing spyware: I'm new as a poster here but have been reading many good answers. This is a comment for those with a browser hijack. I had one hijack (that's one too many!) and every time I fixed the problem, at least one part would return. Until someone mentioned turning the SR off. That made sense and after doing this the system remained clean. I set a new Restore Point and deleted the old ones.

by: larryrohringPosted on 2004-07-02 at 05:44:21ID: 11456195

I have had a similar Hijacking problem on Win98 and I try to get the update from Micro Soft ... It say's it is installed ... but every time I have MS search for updates, it tells me I need the same one. I have gone as far as downloading the update to run locally. I run it in safe mode after running all the spy B.S. and it still doesn't really install. I'm giving up and going to reformat and reload my Win98 soon.
I've gone as far as time permits me to fix this nasty hijacker(About:blank , SP.html , 1004  "" , Bookmarker Trojan)

Hello,

I have fallen foul of this horror, and it really was!

I spent several days trying all the utilities mentioned, like "Spybot, Search and Destroy" and "Adaware", and lots more besides, with zero removal of the replaced homepage.

Then, by chance, I found "SPYSWEEPER", by WEBROOT, a simple search will find it for you.

This has been the only "single click" solution I have found, and a free version with some lilitis is available, plus a version you can purchase also.  I can honestly say it is 100% effective, and it finds so much more than some of the other ones mentioned.

Personally I would not be without it.

I would like to point out that in Internet Explorer: Options, there is a button called "Default Homepage", which resets your homepage the key defined in "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main@Default_Page_URL".

You should put whatever homepage you like to use in here in case you accidently change your homepage.

by: pcassoPosted on 2004-07-07 at 13:06:06ID: 11496026

Hi notfed!

Yes, correct, but the adware that hijacked my DEFAULT HOMEPAGE simply changed it, and the registry keys also.

These adware, or malware, call them as you will, have become very sophisticated, and are becoming more so as time goes on.

I'm afraid clicking on DEFAULT HOMPAGE is not going to resolve very much when it comes to this HOMEPAGE HIJACK scam.  those backing the malware care nothing for you or I, they are interested in just one thing, money and lots of it.

Be sensible, obtain a selection of these very clever and very useful utilities and keep them, just in case. When I think of the amount of time I lost trying for solutions I shudder to think what this is costing industry per annum.   I have a friend in the USA, working for a company with about 100>>110 employess, depending on how busy they are. They too had the homepage hijacked, and it cost in excess of $2000 to find a solution, and repair it, and that was using their own it managers time.

Now they have a $30 commercial version of SPYSWEEPER and no worries.

BTW, I have no commercial connection with any company, I'm retired.

NOTE !!! :
Running Windows update and it say's it's complete but every time you run windows update it acts as if you never installed the update. If you look at your update history you see you've installed the same update several times:

I found that in add remove programs a few "windows update q832559, Q ??????, etc.
I'm sure one was a bogus installed by the maleware and after turning java off and uninstalling all the q?????? installs, the next time I ran windows update all the updates took.
I'm clean now !!!

This is a very interesting commnet you have made about windows updates and one repeating over and over!!

i have experienced this, and frankly, having found no answers to hand after at least downloading it and finding perhaps 15 instances of it on my computer i bit the bullet and re installed XP.

Problem went away, I wish I had read of your solution first.

I found nothing about this issue in the Microsoft data base, and nothing about it on any forum.

It appears to be an answer form you without a full question so to speak, Why was it happening in the first place, i would still like to know?

any ideas or answers?

Windows update constantly saying you need the same update... over ... and over ... and over...:
I believe this is caused by either the "Cool Web Search" or "Bookmarker" maleware as my best guess. I've only found it myself on machines  with windows 98 and Me. But I've found it on several different machines. And now you say it happened with your's with XP. I'm going to try the program "BuggOff" to see if it helps prevent similar problems on other machines.

Download Link Here:
http://radiosplace.com/

Also at the above link I use "Hijack This" to determine what DLL needs to be deleted when maleware attacks.

Pocket KillBox is another favorite of mine, it will allow you to delete a malicious DLL on reboot. It's real handy when you have a hijacker that reappears every reboot from a dll that changes it's name on every boot.

Download Link Here:

http://download.broadbandmedic.com/

Finally to guard against and help fix maleware attacks I run SpyGuard upon boot up.

Good Luck in the future!

THANKS LARRY!!!

I will indeed download the ones you suggest.  I have a folder I keep all these malware and spyware utilities in, i have not found one that works for all, but i must say, my all time favourite, and most effective one is still the  SPYSWEEPER from WEBROOT!!

So far as I remember the only time it was beaten, and it was only a partial defeat really, it was a Russian Dialler, usual sex site stuff.  Spysweeper found it, but could not remove it, but at least it quarrantined it.

I forget now also which one removed it, perhaps System Mechanic, but I would not stand over that.

Thank you again for the list, the more the merrier!!
