Ah hello
Firstly let me say this. I consider myself well versed in computing, but this problem is getting to me now. I have searched the past questions and found lots on Spyware but nothing on IE. Sorry if I am asking for repeated info.
Anyway...
I was browsing the Internet quite innocently, looking for information on firstly splitting wav files, and then later for some song lyrics.
On the first occasion, I found a site (which I will not link to for obvious reasons) that contained the info I needed. Whilst reading this page, there was a lot of disk activity and I heard my PC making some strange noises - which I did not think much to - until in the traybar up popped up a little icon (you know, the one of the two black monitors that states you are connected to your network) telling me I was connected to some 0906 (which is a premium rate number in the UK) network at 9600kbs ! The noises I had heard was the internal modem dialing up (I normally use cable modem you see) ! I instantly disconnected from this network and pulled the plug on my dialup modem, but then later found that I could not connect through my broadband after restarting my machine.
To cut a long story short, two hours later I sorted everything after much frustration and total cable modem/router reinstallation.
On the second instance, whilst looking for song lyrics and viewing suitable pages, I had about eight firewall warnings from McAfee pop up telling me that program X Y or Z was trying to connect to the Internet. After viewing the task manager I found many exes running that I had never heard of *that had come just from these web pages* so killed them all and deleted the exes.
My question is simple: Why on Earth does IE let these programs/DLLs/other rubbish through automatically, and *how can it be stopped (if at all) ?*
The frustration level is high; I am beginning to feel unsafe on the Internet. Someone must know about this !
TIA
