Question

Hijacked? DNS error possible virus?

Asked by: Elcruzii

Hi, there,
I've scanned my system and found no viruses, deleted all adware using Spybot.  When I try to login using IE 6, I get a DNS error page not found.  The URL I try to access is returned as part of an address I didn't enter as in the following (I entered the att.net URL).
http://www.exactsearch.net/search.php?keywords=http://www.att.net/&partner=BB.
I've reinstalled IE 6.  Last thing I did before I shut it down last time was to download an update from MS.  I was using a firewall and Stopzilla but have uninstalled them both to see if they were causing the problem.  I have cable Internet access.
Please help.

Hello Elcruzii =)

Try running this Winsock Repair for XP:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
OR,
Try running this Winsock Repair Utility for Win98\ME:
http://downloads.subratam.org/WinsockFix.zip

>> The URL I try to access is returned as part of an address I didn't enter as in the following
For this, Download HijackThis v1.98.2 from here, run it and Save the LOG file:
http://tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe

Then Post that log at this site >> http://www.hijackthis.de
and it will automatically analyse it for u,,, Fix the entries which it labels as Nasty :)
To Fix, check the lines in Hijackthis scan and click on Fix Checked !!

HJT Log Tutoriol >> http://aumha.org/a/hjttutor.php

CAUTION: Before fixing the entries in hijackthis, make sure that they are really Nasty and can be deleted, better u first research for it on Google and then when u will confirm that they shud be deleted, Fix them. And whenever u run Hijackthis, run it from a New folder on ur desktop, so that in case of any problem, u can take advantages of its created backups of fixed items. And in case if u still face problems in dealing with it, just analyse ur log at the above site, and then scroll down where u will see a Save Analyse button, hit it and it will save ur Log Analysation, then copy the link of that page and paste it here, and we will check it for u :)

Thank you for the quick response!  I'm unable to access the net from the computer that has the problem.  I do have  a second computer I can use to download to a CD and install on the infected one.  Or, is there something I can do to prevent IE from redirecting?  Thanks.

I hope Santa brings you something wonderful this year!  You're great!  I have Internet connectivity back after running the programs you mentioned.  Hijackthis identified LOTS of nasties.  It finally required the Winsock fix because there was a gap in the "chain of dlls" caused by deletion of adware.  Thanks.
