Question

trying to recover old AOL PFC's to view much needed saved emails

Asked by: YnotHi

I am currently using AOL 9.0, in the past I had gotten some errors with AOL and its older versions that were on my computer.  When I upgraded I go into AOL and the PFC's are not working and I really need the saved emails, that go back 3 yrs worth.    I have found the PFC folders and of the older versions of AOL but I dont know how to restore them so that I can see the email.  when I try and click on them them are unknown file types and I open them in notepad I can see my old mails are there but the are scrambled in crap and encoded text.  So how can I get these old PFC's to a point where I can actually view these emails?  Please help I've exhausted most other resources I can think of.

Sincerely,
Heath

If you simply want to view your old mail:

1. Open your current version of AOL

2. On the upper left, choose File>Open

3. Navigate to AOL's Organize folder (in your AOL directory) and click on the .PFC file with your screenname. (you can right click on any file and choose "properties".. this will tell you if it is a .PFC file if you are unsure).

4. In the dialog box, click "Open"

..you will see your emails and be able to click on each one and open them.

Note: The AOL "Organize" folder will likely be in:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL\C_America Online 9.0\organize\

Sorry for not getting back, have been out of town (work with military).  Anyways, I would give assign the points to Daydreams.  Basically I needed to know where to find the old .pfc files which her response gave me.  After that I found a program on my own that would convert the .pfc into a workable version.  Thank you for the help.

By you question, I assume your client is now longer
using AOL.  If, during the time that he was using it,
he had the capability via Setting or Preferences,
depending on the AOL Version to retaina copy or all
"Read Mail" as well as "Sent Mail" in the Personal
Filing Cabinet ("PFC") and with at least AOL 9 and maybe Version 8 he could have saved it onAOL and it would alway be there , limited to some Storage maximum, If he did not save it on AOL, at the time
he uninstalled his Version, there would have been a Desktop Folder of his then BackedUp PFC which
if he may have saved somethere, may be availalbe and instead of reinstalling AOL, you can use the
following program to view the folder, may be not.

PFC Viewer

PFC Viewer is a Java application I developed to view and export the contents of the AOL Filing Cabinet, also known as the Personal Filing Cabinet. I have had an AOL account for many years, and even though my primary Internet account is now with the cable company providing my high-speed access, I still keep the old account around for a variety of minor reasons. One nagging issue is the accumulation of old emails archived within my Personal Filing Cabinet. To maintain access to years of correspondence, I need to use the AOL client program because nothing else can read their proprietary file format for the cabinet. Now, with some software handiwork, I can open the cabinet file, display its contents in a window, and export the emails to a text file.
What PFC Viewer can do:
·     Display the folder structure in the Filing Cabinet.
·     Display the list of emails stored in a folder, and the content of a selected email.
·     Copy selected email text to the system clipboard.
·     Export emails in a selected folder, and its sub-folders, to a text file compatible with other email programs.
·     Export favorites to an HTML file.
What PFC Viewer cannot do:
·     Export address book entries in the Filing Cabinet.
·     Repair a corrupt Filing Cabinet.
·     Cure cancer.

I found a program while I was awaiting a response to my question.  I may have been better off using the program you mentioned above, but the program I found served its purpose.  My biggest problem was not knowing that the .pfc file was still on the computer.  I figured AOL would have saved the emails into a folder under the main AOL folder in program files.  So once it was removed, I assumed they were lost.  Once I was told that AOL doesn't store them there by default, and in a different location, it was just a matter of finding a program that I could use to read the actual emails.  As stated, I found a program while I was awaiting a response, granted the program was a pain in the rear to use, but it did serve its purpose.  I do thank you all for your help.  It was basically Daydreams post of the exact location to the .pfc's that I needed, but  LRI41
post about using a program to convert the .pfc was helpful as well.  So in all fairness, please split points.

If there is another program that can get into theAol propiertary programing and interpret it, rather than
the points, it would have been nice if the name of
the program and the url where you can get it was
posted, for that it my main reason for coming here,
to learn, rather than just for points???

Thanks anyway.

When I get home this evening, I will look up the name of the program and post it in here.  I dont exactly remember where I found it, but I'll try and look it back up again and post a link as well.

Actually looked through my emails where I had registered it.

ForMorph is the name of the program and it is a message converter.

ForMorph is a program that can convert your mail, newsgroup and Compuserve messages to another format so you can use them directly with - or import them into - other programs.
