Question

Flash not showing in Internet Explorer

Asked by: Lord_Morbid

No matter what I have done I cannot get flash to open in Internet Explorer, I design web sites with Dreamweaver and any flash headers I use will not even open when I try to preview the site. I have done some searching and find no real answers to this, it is probably something simple, but not for me....
As well when trying to view web sites while surfing with IE and flash will not show, just a clear box with a stamp in the upper right hand corner.
Thanks in advance, sorry for the lame question.

Hi Lord_Morbid,

Make sure you have the latest Flash version installed:
http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

Best regards,

Esopo.

by: Lord_MorbidPosted on 2005-06-25 at 11:54:18ID: 14301251

Yes, I have done that and on this page I cannot see anything as well, it does not auto detect. It seems to be some kind of security issue maybe, my computer not allowing it to show or something. I also downloaded Shcokplayer and installed it. I must say I have always been able to see Flash until a couple of days ago, I do not remember making any changes.

by: EsopoPosted on 2005-06-25 at 12:01:28ID: 14301267

Ideas:

- Maybe you installed Service Pack 2, or some application installed it without you knowing. Maybe an antivirus, firewall or ISP software. These type of applications could tamper with your security configuration.
Try adding a site that features flash animation to your IE "trusted sites" to see if it is a security problem.

- Did your PC crash on you recently? it could be an error loading the plugin.

Try resetting IE's settings for programs and advanced settings so you basically reset IE back to its defaults !

These 3 sites will take you through it, Look at the 3rd site especially as it walks you through all of it on the 3rd site !!!

http://support.mcihispeed.net/mu/500/psc/img/walkthroughs/windows_9x_nt/browsers/ie_6.0/8455.mci.html

http://ca2.zdag.com/resetBrowser.jsp

http://support.gateway.com/s/software/microsof/sHARED/xpsp2/7513002su68.shtml

Check your Active X control settings to make sure that  IE isnt blocking it from being downloaded or installed or even accepted as something to install in the first place ( hence making sure your security settings are not too high )

If it still does not work then what about trying it with a different browser like Mozilla firefox or Opera :

Firefox :

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Opera :

http://www.opera.com/download/

I hope this helps :)

P.S Please post back with what happens after this :)

Yes i un-installed and re-installed flash plug-in.

My IE does not show in add/remove programs...............I seem to remember there is a way to show your XP files in there but cannot remember where...lol
I even have done sfc /scannow in dos but cannot find my original XP disk, may be at work.
This command will look for any dammaged operating system files.

by: Lord_MorbidPosted on 2005-06-26 at 13:53:41ID: 14304921

I did download IE6 SP1 like gecko suggested, installed it but to no effect, still cannot see flash on the web.

by: gecko_au2003Posted on 2005-06-26 at 14:05:14ID: 14304968

Did you follow and use the first 3 URL's I provided in my first post :

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=318378

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_ie_reinstall.htm

http://www.petri.co.il/reinstall_ie_6_on_xp.htm

If not take a look at them and see if they help and then once you have un installed IE 6 or managed to get it to repair it. Then try and re install IE 6 SP 1.

Also what about doing a windows update with only the critical updates !!! I would avoid SP 2 if I was you !

Other then that if you dont mind taking the time you can either wait until you get the windows xp cd from work and run the sfc /scannow command, if that does not work then back up all of your data and try a repair install :

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

or you can back up all your data that you want to keep and do a completely clean install as a last resort.

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

However before you decide to format the machine, make sure you get the xp product key , installation key or w/e you want to call it by using magic jelly bean key finder :

http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

Save it to a text file or write it down or something so that you basically have it to hand for when you do the re install, that is if you end up going down the clean re install path :)

It is a good idea to have that saved to a text file or somewhere anyway just for future reference :)

by: gecko_au2003Posted on 2005-06-26 at 14:12:50ID: 14304990

If I was you before I do the repair install you should try and scan for spyware and viruses , if you go to this site :

http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Free_Antivirus_Antispyware_Resources-t38.html

They have a full list of free applictions to help you with spyware and viruses, make sure to update them and run those in safe mode and then when you reboot and get back into windows run a free online virus scan :

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

From the above site I would suggest you use avast, hijackthis, adaware and if you have windows xp use at least some of the following :

microsofts anti spyware :

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

spy sweeper:

http://www.download.com/Webroot-Spy-Sweeper/3000-8022_4-10405877.html

spy bot search and destroy :

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Scanspyware :

http://www.scanspyware.net/

by: gecko_au2003Posted on 2005-06-26 at 14:14:08ID: 14304995

Just so you know, if you dont have windows xp, the only anti spyware application you cant use is microsofts beta anti spyware, the rest should work in windows 9x :)

If you already knew that then just ignore this post :)

btw sorry for all the posts !!

by: Lord_MorbidPosted on 2005-06-26 at 15:33:20ID: 14305224

Yes Gecko, as I stated I do not have access to my XP cd right now,  I am an avid "scanner" I update and run Spybot, Adaware, xsoftspy, AVG Antivirus(imo the best antivirus) and kaspersky religiously. The thing that bothers me is it just quit working one day, I have had the same set-up for 3yrs now and have always used IE to view my web sites when designing them. I also have a program that uninstalls and re-installs IE, but again I do not have my cd handy.
I will let you know what happens ASAP. In the meantime, I am enjoying Firefox, Dreamweaver allows me to add such browsers to be able to view my web sites when needed.

by: war1Posted on 2005-06-26 at 15:37:41ID: 14305243

Lord_Morbid, glad Dreamweaver works with Firefox. :)

by: gecko_au2003Posted on 2005-06-26 at 15:40:31ID: 14305257

Even thought your IE does not work at least the firefox gives you a temporary fix or work around :)

If I was you I would get avast from www.avast.com

I used to be the same with regards to AVG but when I got avast and some other free anti virus scanners like nod32 avast picked up some things that AVG didnt, when it comes to viruses and spyware its always a good idea to use more then one gun so to speak.

If I was you I would at least run the online virus scan as mentioned above and try out avast ( you can get avast completely free for home use ) and imo it is one of the best.

Sophos is another good one !!

www.sophos.com

Anway I will leave you to it and I await your post back with regards to waiting for your xp cd :)

Good luck !

P.S I dont suppose you have any up and running websites I could look at , just I got a little bit into websites a while back and I would love to learn more about dreamweaver and how to use it correctly with regards to making a decent website(s) etc.

If it is ok with you and EE rules , maybe you could send me an email ( My email address is on my profile )

Thanks in advance !

>> I am seriously thinking of using Firefox from now on.<<
That's not a bad idea at all. Make sure you install the web developer extension for Firefox. You'll wonder how could you ever code without it:

I would like to know if I may present the links too some of my work here, I am completley self taught and am proud of some of my recent sites I have published. How do you find out if this would be ok?
Anyway, I will have my XP cd today and will try some of the suggestions later tonight, will post results ASAP.
Also, I have tried those other AV programs, Trend Micro online scan is a very good one, but IMO the newer version of AVG free is still one of the best, with updates almost daily.

by: gecko_au2003Posted on 2005-06-27 at 06:42:54ID: 14308489

You can post them on your profile if you go to the link at the top that says "My Account" and when your profile loads click on the button I think it is the one that says "Edit Profile".

Also with regards to the AVG anti virus, I wasn't disagreeing with you as it still is good I was just saying that there are other ones out there and that it doesnt hurt just to have a back up AV solution like avast to help you out with regards to keeping your machine clean.

I hope my suggestions helped you out :)

If it is ok with you maybe you can send me an email sometime, my email address is in my profile ( which is the only place you are allowed to place an email address just FYI ).

Kind regards

>>I would like to know if I may present the links too some of my work here<<
If you want input on your site, you can ask for it in a question. It is as plausible as asking about a code problem.

Within IE - tools - internet options - general - temporary internet files - settings - view objects..... is anything listed there as either unknown or damaged?  if so, please remove/delete any such items, close IE and reopen.  Then try again to reinstall the Plugin and advise if there's any change.

I had a very similar problem about 6 months ago. I posted a question here and got the following link as an answer:

Several dialog boxes are blank
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;831430

This involves just resetting the javascript/vbscript registry entries. This is very simple and only takes a few minutes. You MUST reboot when you are done, however, in order to see if it works. It's worth it to try this first, before you reinstall Windows or reformat your hard disk.

Here is my original question, if you want more background:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/Browser_Issues/Q_21274081.html

Good luck, and please post back with the results.

by: coderlenPosted on 2005-07-28 at 20:08:12ID: 14551773

Of course, I am very curious what the solution to this problem is. Hopefully, the asker will respond with results of the testing.

by: gecko_au2003Posted on 2005-07-29 at 09:34:16ID: 14556325

I agree with coderlen, I made a suggestion with regards to Firefox which didnt resolve the issue with IE but was a work around for Lord_Morbid and I would really like some feedback as to what is going on because it would be great to get the issue resolved :)

I think his best bet to be honest would be to back up all your data that you need and completely format and re install everything from scratch making sure you have got any drivers you need :) IMHO

Best of luck and kind regards

I met the exactly same problem. And I slove it by do the following, hope it may help you.

1. Because System does not prompt to re-install flash, it means that some of the registry has been cheated as flash installed.

2. type "regedit" in run command box, and find the following registry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE \Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000}],
delete the main key value of {D27CDB6E-AE6D- 11CF-96B8-444553540000}. Quit from the registry.

3. Search flash.ocx in your system disk and delete it.

4. Open your Internet Explorer and surge on some website containing flash, such as http://www.macromedia.com/. And then IE will prompt you to install flash.
