Question

Using IE6 to FTP - cannot clear passwords

Asked by: nick_clarke

I am using IE6 on Windows XP Sp2 to connect to an IIS FTP server (V6 on Windows Server 2003) I get prompted for username and password -  Enter the credentials and all OK.

UNTIL:

I accidentally asked IE6 to remember the password for the site now everytime I go to the FTP site I am NO LONGER asked for the username as password it just goes straight into the site.  This is a problem as I now want to change the username and password.

Going to :  Tools -> Internet Options -> Content -> AutoComplete -> Clear Passwords / Clear Forms

Does not work.  I have unfortunatley managed to replicate the problem on another computer

Any help would be great

If you change the password on the ftp server, then IE should popup the login dialog next time you try to access the server.  Then I guess you can uncheck the "remember" flag.

Hiya,

Thanks for the suggestions;

GrandSchtroumpf : Changing the password on the Server will probably work, I had thought of it, but I hoped there would be something the enduser could do immediatley on the local machine.  Especially with the users all being in different time zones and it would be me that would have to get up in the early hours of the morn to reset a password.

War1:  Just to confirm your sugestion had been tried already and does not work.

sramesh2k:  Followed the document to the letter but I dont have any registry entries in the key that was specified and there where no passwords stored when using "control keymgr.dll"

Any other suggestions?

Hiya

sramesh2k:  My appologies, when I said I followed it to the letter, I was not entirely truthful,  I did miss a huge bit about modifying the registery permissions.  (Shame on me) , however even though I have now done this I cannot find an entry for the FTP site which I might add is referenced by an IP address and not by a URL, should that make a difference, I did see several references to sites that I have been to which require usernames and passwords but nothing associated to the ftp site.

HELP!  So far it looks like im in for some restless nights changing the odd password

In Internet Explorer, there is an area to remember passwords. Delete them.  Go to Tools > Options > Content > AutoComplete.  Click "Clear Passwords".
