Question

Title: res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm#

Asked by: Gary56

I'm getting the above error in IE 7, in the url address bar. I was getting it in IE 6 & decided to upgrade to IE 7 to see if it'd be corrected, but no. I also went to the MS knowledge base & tried just about everything there. As I was registering .dll files into the registry I came across this error message "mshtml.dll was loaded, but the DLLRegisterServer entry point was not found". My LAN settings are fine & have no prob w/Firefox or my mail client. I've also cleaned all of the cache, history, objects, etc.
 Any other info needed to resolve this issue, please don't hesitate to ask.
Many thanks in advance to all participants,
                                                              Gary

Have you recently cleaned up this machine from spyware?

From http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/154209.html it sounds like that was a bug in IE7 also so upgrading to it may not help.  Personally I would uninstall IE7 Beta until you get IE6 fixed and then you can try it.

war1 will probably be able to help you with this in about 2 seconds but I am going to suggest uninstalling IE7 then following the instructions here for repair/reinstalling ie6.

Greetings, Gary56 !

res://c:\windows\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htmThis nearly always means that it can not find the site. Does your home page actually exist? if you type in another address, does it work?

1. Disable third party extensions. With IE open, go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced. Uncheck "Third party extensions". Click Ok. Reboot computer.

2. Reset IE settings.  Go to Tools > Internet Options > Programs.  Click on "Reset Web Settings" button. Go to Advanced tab and click "Restore Defaults" button. Go to Security tab and move the bar to Medium or Default. Click OK. Close all browsers. Reboot the computer.

Best wishes!

Thanks mtz1of4. I read your comment & saw that war1 had posted already, so I gave his suggestion a try 1st. Followed everything above, verbatim and once pc was rebooted I opened IE & typed www.google.com into address bar & it returned "res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm#http://www.google.com/" in the address bar & "Page Could Not Be Displayed" on the browser page.
I'm going to go ahead & follow mtz1of4's advice in the meantime & uninstall the IE7 until a final version is out. I'll wait to hear for some more suggestions.
Thanks,
           Gary

Gary,

1. In your homepage setting in IE, make sure you do not have a bad address. With IE open, go to Tools > Internet Options. Change the homepage to blank and test.

2. You could have a variation of About:Blank mailware.

To uninstall Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3, Beta 2, Beta 2 Preview, or Beta 1 and restore Internet Explorer 6 when using Windows XP or Windows Server 2003

   1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
   2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
   3. Scroll down to "Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3", "Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2" or "Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview", click it, and then click Change/Remove.
   4. If you cannot find any version of Internet Explorer 7 in the step above, select the Show Updates check box at the top of the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, scroll down to Windows XP - Software Updates, select "Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview" or "Internet Explorer 7 Beta 1" and then click Change/Remove.

If you cannot find an Internet Explorer 7 entry in "Add or Remove Programs", try running these commands. Each is for a different release of Internet Explorer 7 so only one will succeed. To run any of these commands, you need to have "View hidden folders" enabled. In the commands below, %windir% is the location of your Windows directory, which can usually be found at C:\Windows. To run these commands, click "Start," click "Run," and type one of the following:

    * %windir%\ie7beta3\spuninst\spuninst.exe
    * %windir%\$NtUninstallie7beta1$\spuninst\spuninst.exe.
    * %windir%\$NtUninstallie7bet2p$\spuninst\spuninst.exe.
    * %windir%\$NtUninstallie7b2pmx$\spuninst\spuninst.exe.
    * %windir%\$NtUninstallie7beta2$\spuninst\spuninst.exe.

If the uninstall process causes the computer to stop responding while removing Internet Explorer 7, restart the computer, delete any custom sound schemes created after installing the Internet Explorer 7 Beta, and then try to uninstall Internet Explorer 7 again.

Thanks again.........P.S. I noticed that the analysis showed DAPbho.dll to be a "nasty", but in the years that I've had it, never experienced any ill affects.

A couple things jump at me but I need t odo more research.
1. The service BFDTU . Do YOU know what that is in regards to?  I couldn't find more than one reference to bfdtu in google.

2. Does Ghostsurf 2005 expire?  Does it work with Firefox or is it possible that is what is blocking you?

Never mind.  Do you have Norton's Firewall AND Zoner Alarm's Firewall blocking you?

You should uninstall Norton's Firewall. ZA's is better.

Personally, I would uninstall the full Norton's suite that you have installed and ONLY reinstall the AV portion of it.  My 2 cents.

You have Download Accelerator Plus.  It use to be considered spyware, but DAP has changed its policy lately.  If DAP has not cause you any problem, do not remove it.

You have the Google Toolbar.  Temporarily disable it and see if the problem goes away.

If you did not install the following items, put a check mark by the items in HijackThis log and click "Fix Checked".
