Question

Acrobat files will not open within Firefox

Asked by: michaelnorth

Hello,

I'm using the latest version of Firefox (1.5.0.6) and the latest version of Acrobat Standard (7.0.8). By the way, I do not have the separate Acrobat Reader on my machine.

In Firefox, whenever I click on a .pdf link, I get an error message: "Cannot use Adobe Acrobat to view PDF in your web browser. Reader will now exit. Please exit your browser and try again." But when I try again, the same thing happens.

If I download the .pdf to my drive, I can open it in Acrobat with no problems. And if I surf with Internet Explorer, I can open any .pdf right in the browser.

The problem seems to be with Firefox, or it's interaction with Acrobat. On a whim, I tried the "PDF Download" extension for Firefox, thinking that might make a difference, but I got the same error message as before.

How can I open Acrobat files within the Firefox browser?

Hi michaelnorth,

I had the same problem before and I installed foxit reader http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php.
It is quicker than Acrobat reader and the problems with firefox were solved.
If you want, you can try it.

Greetings, michaelnorth !

Sounds like the Adobe Acrobat connection to Firefox is not installed correctly or is corrupted.  Make sure you have all the latest updates for Acrobat Standard.

If no joy, I recommend uninstalling Acrobat Standard.  Then use Windows Installer cleanup utility to remove remaining bits, and remove Acrobat Reader, if it is there.

Then reinstall Acrobat Standard and all its updates.

Best wishes!

Hi War1,

Yes, actually I just installed Acrobat standard yesterday along with all it's updates. But of course, it could still be corrupt. I've never used the Clean Up tool . . . could that potentially screw up my system? Don't want to cause yet more problems :-(

No, Windows Installer cleanup utility is very safe.

Delete your cache in Firefox and test again.

I. If no joy, since you just installed Acorbat yesterday, do a repair instead

1. Choose Start > Control Panel > Add Or Remove Programs.
2. Select Acrobat or Adobe Reader, and then click Change/Repair (Windows XP) or Change/Remove (Windows 2000).
3. In the Setup dialog box, click Next.
4. Select Repair, and then Click Next.
5. Click Update.
6. When the process is complete, click Finish.

II. Deselect and then reselect the Display PDF In Browser preference.

1. In Acrobat or Adobe Reader, choose Edit > Preferences (Windows) or [application] > Preferences (Mac OS).
2. Select Internet.
3. Deselect Display PDF In Browser, and then click OK.
4. Quit and then start Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
5. Choose Edit > Preferences > Internet, select Display PDF In Browser, and then click OK.

III. Remove and reinstall the browser application. (Firefox only)

If you receive the error "Cannot use Adobe Reader to view PDFs in your web browser" when you try to view a PDF file in Firefox, then do the following:

1. Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Select Change or Remove Programs in the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, select DreamFactory Runtime for Netscape, Mozilla and Firefox, and click Change/Remove.
4. Click OK in the Remove Programs From Your Computer dialog box.
5. Reinstall Firefox from the original download.

This is getting very frustrating . . . I have gone through all these steps twice and no joy. Acrobat now refuses to update itself -- stuck in 7.0.0, which I suspect is not compatible with Firefox.

When I run update, the update files are shown as available, but it will not install. I have used Clean Up, and uninstalled - reinstalled Acrobat three times. There are no other conflicting programs on this machine that I'm aware. Currently, I don't even have Firefox installed, just trying to get Acrobat up to speed.

Thinking of just installer the READER instead of Acrobat Standard for Firefox to use. Ideas? Why won't Acrobat Standard update? And beyond that, are we sure there isn't some inherent conflict between the latest version of Acrobat/Firefox? It just doesn't seen to hook up. I've been using PC's over 20 years, never had this much trouble getting something to work.

There is no known conflict between Acrobat Standard and Firefox.  I have Adobe Reader on my computer working with Firefox.  Acrobat Standard should update.

by: michaelnorthPosted on 2006-09-12 at 14:10:31ID: 17506920

I can open a local file with Acrobat no problem, although it does indicate updates are available and asks if I want to install them. But nothing happens. No indication of any activity. Acrobat doesn't lock up, but doesn't do anything either.

Working now!

There were three main steps.

1. The installation CD was placing two instances of the file nppdf32.dll on the machine. My understanding is that there should only be one file under Acrobat 7.0\, not under Firefox\. I deleted the extra file.

2. The auto-update feature within Acrobat was not working correctly. I had to download the updates from Adobe and manually install them one by one.  They have many, many updates, so you have to be careful which you choose. http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1&platform=Windows.

3. I then toggled the "Display in Browser" setting in Acrobat and cleared the cache in Firefox.

By the way, I was only able to update to 7.0.3 -- later updates were not accepted for some reason. I also tried the auto-update feature within Acrobat again; it indicated "no updates available", so I guess that's it for now.

I think this primarily boiled down to installing the updates manually.
