Question

IE7 will not run SWF files but IE6 will -

Asked by: jameskane

Hi, I have link pointing to my server asking for an swf file to be downloaded and launched. Never a problem with IE6, but with IE7 the swf downloading process starts but does not finish and I get the explanation mark telling me there is an error.
line 1 CHAR 1
error OBJECT EXPECTED
code 0 URL http://cannes-beaux-arts.com/gallery/gallery.swf

My other computer still has IE6 and the swf launches perfectly

If I create an html page (index.html) and embed the swf into it, giving the new address http://cannes-beaux-arts.com/gallery/index.html - then that works fine on both versions of IE.

also, if i launch an swf file directly from my local machine, it will come up fine on ie7

Question, is there a setting for flash files that I dont have correct in my IE7 set up ??

Greetings, jameskane !

Other users with similar problem found that if they update their Flash Player, IE7 and SWF file will work. Ensure you have the latest version of the Flash Player installed for Internet Explorer.

You can view your browser's current Flash Player here : http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_15507

Best wishes!

Many thanks for the reply and the link.

I checked it out and I my version was a little out of date. Unfortunately did not make any difference.

I have since checked out the page with another pc which has IE7 and there is no problem.

The mystery continues !!

Other users have reported they had difficulty with IE7 and swf file.  There is no setting to check or uncheck.

Check if an IE addon or a program running in the background could be interfering. Disable them one by one.

You may want to create a new user profile in Windows.

Hi there, sorry for not getting back. The situation got a little more complicated, in that I found that the files launched on another machine which had IE7, so the situation was specific to my machine / my IE7 config as you suggested.

Didnt have the time to try what you suggested, given that the probllem looked specific to my machine. I put in a fix which allowed my machine to show the files.
I put each of the swfs into their own pages ( simple page, create layer and stick the swf into it) hey voila !! the page launches with the swf fired up just fine !!

I think I'll just leave it at that !

many thanks for the inputs, I will follow the diagnotic procedure if the problem reoccurs in another area !!

You could also try this if you are okay with changing your registry, and then try the original swf file links that were giving you problems.
