Question

Browsers will not load pages

Asked by: Firstedition0

Hi
I have a computer that will not open web pages using a browser. Both IE7 and FireFox are affected. The computer will connect to the network AND to the internet. Any program that does not the a browser to connect to the internet works fine i.e spybot 1.4. The computer seems to be clear of viruses. Spybot found StarWare but thats gone now. No firewalls are running and the winsock has been reset.
Starting to run out of ideas now.

What O/S  is it?  XP, 2000, 98?

Have you tried opening a web site using the IP number instead of the name?

try running nslookup  at a command prompt for www.google.com, It should look something like this:

c:\>nslookup www.google.com

Name:    www.l.google.com
Addresses:  64.233.167.147, 64.233.167.99, 64.233.167.104
Aliases:  www.google.com

Then try the first IP number to see if it opens that way.

If it opens by IP, but not name, then you know that it is probably a DNS issue and you might have to configure the DNS in TCP/IP

Hi
Forgot to mention that the ONLY page that tries to load is http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005
The browser says website found waiting for reply but never loads. I am sure this has something to do with loading on internet explorer 7 but can not find a solution.
Entering an ip Address has no effect it just carries on trying to load but never gets there.

Tried prevx. It has had a slight effect as now the browser comes up with the internet explorer cannot display the webpage Page instead of just hanging.

The Opperating system is xp home.
Did nslookup and yes it can see the outside world but I already new this as I can update programs. The problem is with the browsers they will not load pages. I am quite sure this is to do with the IE 7 update. I have tried uninstalling back to IE 6 but it is still finding information from somewhere that is preventining the browser from downloading pages.

Problem solved.
I had already disabled ALL of Mcafee, AntiVirus, Firewall, Spam Filters, Parental Controls.
That had no effect, so decided to uninstall the program. As it would not fully uninstall I had to obtain a copy of McAfee's uninstall Tool, which remorved McAfee in safe mode.
Computer now connects to the internet.
Thanks for all advice given
