Question

The server at (URL) is taking too long to respond.

Asked by: cdplayer

There is a website my client can't access. www.benswade.co.uk
When they go to the website they get the following error messages:

The connection has timed out

The server at www.benswade.co.uk is taking too long to respond.

    *   The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
          moments.

    *   If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
          connection.

    *   If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web

We have checked IE and made sure that the site was not found under Restricted sites.
Clear out cookies and Files. Stilll get the same results.
We successfully installed FireFox. Still we can't access that site.
This is strange since accessing any other site appears not to be a problem.
BTW, I don't have a problem accessing that site from my computers.

Greetings cdplayer !

1. Clear your DNS cache.  Go to Start > Run and type CMD
and hit OK.
At the command prompt, type ipconfig /flushDNS
and hit OK.

2. Clear your cache.  Go to Tools > Internet Options > General tab.  Under Temporary Internet Files, click "Delete Files" button. Also click "Delete Cookies" button. Click OK.

3. If no joy, check if your PC is blocking the site.  Do a search for HOSTS file and open it with an editor like Notepad. Delete any line that has the blocked site in it.

HOSTS file is located in
Windows XP      =      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K     =     C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98/ME     =     C:\WINDOWS

It is a hidden file. Go to any folder and select Tools > Folders Options > View. Check "Show hidden files and folders". Click OK.

4. Check if the site is restricted or blocked.  Go to Tools > Internet Options > Content tab > Content Advisor, check if the site is restricted there. Remove it.

Also, under Security tab, add the website to your trusted zone.

5. Check if antispyware, antivirus, or firewall is blocking the website.

Best wishes, war1

Thanks war1 for replying!
I followed your suggestions unfortunately your suggestions above did not resolve the problem.  I  even ran the WinsockxpFix  to no avail.

This is really strange.  They cannot access this site via their Windows or their Macintosh computer.  What is really scary is that they don't have a router!  So they disconnect one computer from the modem to give to the other computer access to the Internet. I'm going to have to talk to them about the importance of getting a router!

Any other suggestions and or comments are extremely welcome!

Cheers, cdplayer :)

The website is not anything special.  It only has a few small images.  No flash. User can access all websites except this one?  You have added the website to the Trusted Sites area?

by: cdplayerPosted on 2007-05-23 at 04:22:24ID: 19140671

Yes I added that site to the Trusted Sites area yesterday.

There could be a program running in the background blocking the site.  Temporarily disable your antivirus, antispyware, Google Desktop and other programs running in the background, and then test.
