Reducing Internet Usage # 2
Hi,
1. We detect per Websense, one of our client's internet usage is Way UP for several days.
2. I have adjusted the Content of IE; i have scanned the virus (No virus found), i have removed all unnecessary tool bars, etc ...
3. But it seemed it did not work.
4. There is a message of a certain URL (http://updateservice.sonic.com/Ping.asp) from his computer which was recorded at Websense.
5. Any help ?
6. Thank you
Tjie

I tried the "accepted solution", but apparently it affects only the check for updates at application startup; it does not prevent the update service from querying its server 144 times a day when the software is not in use. The server doesn't always respond (no wonder, with so many queries coming in), but every time it succeeds, it downloads two Active Server Pages named Version and GetMessages to the Temporary Internet Files folder, where hundreds of these files accumulate (new ones don't replace the old ones).
Finding no update service unique to Roxio/Sonic, I dug more deeply into this problem. The real culprit behind this is the InstallShield Update Service, which is launched through two registry entries under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Wi
Disabling the InstallShield Update Service affects all applications that use it, not just Roxio/Sonic, but I chose to remove the two ISUS* entries from the Run key and to shut down their running processes in Task Manager. Then, as a hedge against reinstatement, I renamed the executables in InstallShield's UpdateService folder as well. The unwanted Internet traffic is gone.
