The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Can ping websites w/dns resolution but can not browse websites, except Google

Tags: ping, browse, can
I have a site with 3 computers, 2 xp and 1 vista.  As of today none of them are able to browse the internet except to Google.  Google will navigate properly but you can not get anywhere else.  Tried pinging by URL and ip address successfully.  Tried browsing by ip address - no good.  Brought my laptop in and successfully connected so router and isp is ok.  Compared all ipconfig settings - exactly the same.  Checked hosts and lmhosts on first xp system - just loopback.  Ran AV scan and spybot scans.  AV found trojan zonebac on one system and removed it (Norton was AV).  The system that had the trojan is running ZoneAlarm 7.0.4 and Norton Internet Security 2005.  I know this is not a good idea but it was already running.  Just before the problem Netgear support was helping to configure the firewall for a site to site VPN but we couldn't get it to pass data.  I don't suspect this though since I can connect with this laptop.  Also email does work for what it's worth.  I'm open to any ideas!  Thanks

Hi,
Are you sure that the trojan was cleaned up. You will see this entry in a HijackThis log. The registry entry and file need to be killed.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Lexmark_X79-55] C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsasss.exe

I would recommend you run HJT on the infected PC.

Look for that line or anything else suspicious. Post the log here if you're not sure and we can help.

try disabling all your firewalls, and then test, they may not be configured correctly

also as IndiGenus pointed out, the trojan may also still be live. Zonebac writes itself into your startup, so if it is not removed, it will recover itself. It also interferes with your default browser.

Follow the removal steps

Hmm...just reading through that link RedK and saw something else that may or may not be a concern here too.

I've had a few HJT logs lately where this or a similar website shows up in the 015's...ie whataboutadog.com, whatabouta...ect...

They have all ended also having AWF infections. Not sure if you're familiar with them but long story short they overright .exe files with infected files and place the good .exe's in bak folders. FindAWF works well to clean this up but it's a multistep (4 or 5) process. Be interesing to see the HJT log here.
Possibly get a FindAWF log. Just food for thought.

see what your dns server is saying

c:\nslookup    <enter>

> www.cnn.com    <enter>

and press enter

and compare

you can then check with telnet.....

c:\telnet  66.65.22.3 80         <enter>       <-- notice port 80 spaced out after ip address

then screeen will go blank, no you can type a standard http header like so....

GET / HTTP/1.1       <enter>

Hey guys,  Here's the answer.  Don't know how it could be but even though I could get out and nobody else could it ended up being a router problem after all.  A chance individual happened at the cust site, suggested a bunch of stuff that made no sense but did do the one thing I hadn't.  Unplug the router and let it restart.  It apparently was in a somewhat unstable state as some settings I had removed earlier were still there.  Made me feel really stupid.  If you've been there you understand.  I guess we need to remember more often to try the simplest things just in case.
