Question

Can't access Gmail with IE7

Asked by: toketai

All of a sudden I can't access my Gmail account with IE7. Here's what I see:
<http://www.rcblue.com/images/GmailProblem.png>

However, I CAN access Gmail with Firefox, but I much prefer IE7.

Any ideas how to correct this?

And in the meantime, my default email "program" is Gmail, and clicking on an email link also fails similarly. How can I my default email client back to Eudora?

Hello toketai,

The login problem may be due to a corrupted cookie or Gmail servers are slow. Clear the cookies files and cache in your browser.  Try alternate login address

https://mail.google.com/mail/
or
http://mail.google.com/mail/h/

Hope this helps!

Enable cookies in Internet Explorer 7
   1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
(Windows XP Classic View - click on Windows Start button and select Settings and Control Panel).
   2. Double-click the Internet Options icon.
   3. Select the Privacy tab.
   4. Under Settings, click Advanced button.
   5. Check the box Override automatic cookie handling under Cookies section in Advanced Privacy Settings window.
   6. Under First-party Cookies, select Accept.
   7. Under Third-party Cookies, select Accept.
   8. Check the box Always allow session cookies.
   9. Click OK.
  10. Click OK to exit.

Wart1, because I'm reluctant to delete cookies unless absolutely necessary, I first tried deleting IE7's Temp Internet Files. That seemed to do the trick, as I was subsequently able to access my Gmail with IE7.  But because I'm not sure the success will continue, I won't click the "Accept as Solution" button quite yet.

toketai, glad you can access your Gmail.  Keep us updated on your access. Gmail is still in beta, so sometimes is a little flaky.

by: toketaiPosted on 2008-01-11 at 15:55:36ID: 20641844

Wart1, still flaky. But using only IE7, can get to Gmail by alternating the http:// address with the https:// address. But the 2nd or 3rd try I'm in.

Maybe I should try deleting just the Gmail cookie. How can I identify it?  (Deleting ALL cookies would cause me a lot of trouble.)

I tried your settings. Still no good.

Currently JeffSturgeon2002's suggested settings are still set.

toketai,

Some users are experiencing a blank page problem when trying to access Gmail in IE7.  Access comes and goes.  This is a Google problem.

As a workaround, you can try accessing with Firefox ro another browser.

In that same thread you just gave me the link to, this post applies precisely with me. I've used both links quoted, several times, and both work every time for me.

Clearing my history/cookies does help but only for a single log in. I
have to clear my history before every time I log in. Trying
alternative urls sometimes help. The most reliable ones seem to be
https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2 (for the new version) and
https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=1 (for the old version). Uninstalling
google toolbar (v5 ie7) and the google updated did not help in my
case.

So going directly to newer version or older version worked for you?

Hm. Since posting, I've found the newer version failing, but the link to the older version hasn't failied me yet.

by: war1Posted on 2008-01-13 at 15:31:39ID: 20649855

toketai,

You can try what JeffSturgeon2002 suggested.  Since the problem is on Google server, it may not work.

by: toketaiPosted on 2008-01-13 at 15:39:30ID: 20649872

War1,

No, I did try those settings. Now I want to know if I should leave them set.

BTW do you guys know anything about scripting for ActiveWords? http://www.activewords.com/

by: war1Posted on 2008-01-13 at 15:44:20ID: 20649888

You can leave those settings set.  The settings leave your computer a little less secure than the default settings.

You can reset to default setting and test if the change make any difference to your access of Gmail.

My mom had this problem for some reason when it goes to redirect to:  http://www.gmail.com vs https://www.gmail.com.
I just cleared all temporary internet cache and it worked.
