Question

Problem accessing the internet, Get redirected to http://gateway.2wire.net/xslt?PAGE=HURL08

Asked by: dmctech2005

Hello All
I am using a BT2700HGV ADSL modem and my browser keeps trying to connect to gateway.2wire.net or 192.168.1.254 when trying to get on the Internet.
Every user connects to the internet (unsuccessfully of course) the browser tried to connect to gateway.2wire.net. I have tried using firefox and it does the same.
I have flushed DNS and the arp cache and still IE tried to connect to 2wire first.
I can do a nslookup of www.google.com and ping and tracert to google but cannot browse it.
I have also reset the winsock catalog and still the clients try to connect to the 2wire
Im sure the ADSL modem is the problem however I can see no setting on the unit that would cause this issue. The firewall on this unit is set to allow http traffic out.

I would appreciate your help on this matter

Regards

Joe

Well from what I can read, gateway.2wire.net is the router's advanced configuration page.

The only reason I can think of that would make it default to there is, if there is some configuration problem or other, something missing in the config.

If you have not done any changes, you could try to reset the router, if you know it has specific configurations in it, I would suggest contacting your supplier if it's a ISP supplied router and if not, I would call the manufacturer and ask them why it's defaulting to the configuration webpage.

Sorry, thats all I can suggest here

From what i see the modem is not functioning correctly.  Do you have a router setup with the ASDL Modem as well?  If so have you unplugged the Router. Modem and turned off the PC then in this order turned on teh router, modem and then the PC so that the router and modem can detect each other and connect correctly?

Other than that i would suggest a call to the ISP Provider.

From my research I came across this from 2wire which seems to have sorted the problem
Under certain circumstances the 2wire gateway hijacks your internet
requests and redirects your browser to a page generated by the gateway
itself. As mentioned above, when the gateway detects either excessive
sessions (can be caused by worms and/or misconfigured bitorrent
clients), or a problem caused by router-behind-router issue it
redirects you to an error page to alert you of the problem.
There are other problems where the 2wire gateway sends you a
self-generated response (no sync, no ppp auth, green light).

That answer, while correct does not provide a solution.  After having this problem, I did indeed find a bittorrent running amuck on my network.  However, the only way to get the 2wire gateway/firewall to reset, was to do a complete factory reset, not just a soft boot or a power cycle.  Once I did that, it behaved properly.  It was a pain to put all my firewall settings back in, but that's the deal.
