Question

Shockwave player won't install

Asked by: rpggamergirl

Problem:
IE won't display some images, as in logging into websites with security code images, the security code won't display. Firefox is the same.
Shockwave test failed. Been troubleshooting how to install Shockwave player as that seem to be the problem. Standalone shockwave file didn't work. Firewall and antivirus doesn't seem to be the culprit.
The user want the 'security code' in website login to display so he can login.
Any idea?
Thanks.

Are you running service pack 2 on XP?

If so, have you tried this from Adobe??

Hello rpggamergirl,

http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_15895
If you are having problems installing Shockwave Player, uninstall using the uninstaller. Once the player is uninstalled, re-install the player using the appropriate stand-alone installer. This will solve most installation issues. If you continue to have problems with the player, see the Shockwave Player Support FAQ.

Hope this helps!

flubbster,
I've been to that link and I've looked at the Untrusted Publishers and Adobe wasn't listed. Also Flash player is already successfully installed, thanks.

war1,
I've been to the Support FAQ, and I've used their uninstaller then I reinstalled the standalone shockwave player but still no joy, security images still won't show, thanks.

lol @orangutang:
shhh...and help me with this please, okay Doc? :)

Are you sure that it is Shockwave that is responsible for viewing this image? I always thought it was a CAPTCHA image inserted via a php script. Not that familiar overall with it, but am wondering if there might be another reason for you not beiong able to see it.

by: rpggamergirlPosted on 2008-04-18 at 07:39:58ID: 21386194

It's just a little red X inplace of where the security image used to be. i had a print screen but didn't seem to attach.

I thought it would be Shockwave because that's the one that failed to load when I went to macromedia's test page.

Out of desperation I've downloaded Opera and amazingly it displays those security images.
I'm stumped why IE and Firefox can't display them while Opera can?
IE is my default browser so I really would like to fix this issue instead of using opera.
I hope someone will find a solution for me, I'll be away for at least one week and I don't have internet access during that time.
Any ideas, just post and I'll be back in a week, thanks.

OK, some scattered ideas...

Sometimes the CAPTCHA codes are generated by servers external to the main one where the site is located. Then they can be seen as unsafe since the CAPTCHA code is being called from an external site.

Do you use ZoneAlarm, by any chance? Did you let it install the toolbar?

Can you list a couple of sites where you've had the issue?

Cheers,
LHerrou

by: flubbsterPosted on 2008-04-30 at 08:58:13ID: 21471967

the obvious I guess.. have you tried to reregister IE? Is it IE6 or 7?

iexplore.exe /rereg

also, try looking at your user agent string. If something changed it, then you will have trouble with CAPTCHA displays and other similar type images. You can check it here for proper format.

Hi rpggamergirl, I know it's different asking a question lol
to attach a file or image look below the comments box >>attach file.

Is this red X  only on the sites you log into?
Sometimes it maybe the actual site.
Red x  indicates a security setting is too high
Do you have Norton installed?
Could be a third-party internet security or your firewall, or cookie-blocking program is causing the problem some internet utilities, such as Norton Internet Utilities, perform functions similar to a firewall and may restrict viewing of ActiveX controls, and in some cases specifically blocking Shockwave content. You need to ensure that your firewall or utility settings are set to allow ActiveX controls and Shockwave (SWF) content

have you cleared all the temporary Internet files deleted the history etc?
Accept all cookies enabled??<<
IE /tools/options advanced.
Enable scripting, ActiveX controls, cookies, and Java programs >> under the Security tab, and then click Default Level  for the zone that contains the Web page

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.

lherrou,
There's no Zone Alarm, I unstalled it and that was just a firewall. I had no firewall there for a while when troubleshooting, now I just use the Windows one.
It's only just one site that has an issue, it's weird because in another site their security code comes up okay,  btw I forgot to mention that 3 days ago I managed to fix the Firefox security image issue, so it's now just IE that doesn't display.

Vee_Mod,
Thanks, and I also reinstall java and no joy still.

Netman66,
I did that, then reinstall shockwave again, same.

Flubbster,
It's IE6, I also reregistered it

Merete,
I don't have Norton, my antivirus was disabled and I didn't have firewall while I troubleshoot for a few days.
I did all those IE tweaks etc. before I posted my question. The link you gave is good thanks and I tried rightclicking on the red X but the Type just says "Not available".

Thanks rpggamergirl, then it's narrowed down
I also over looked your main comment
" The user want the 'security code' in website login to display so he can login. "
Does anyone else have this problem when logging in?

Do you see this at the bottom of the web page>Javascripts()
as it could very well be an action script problem  Or the image used is PNG not compatible with IE.
To start off I recommend paying a visit to Fred Langa's Browsertune site.
This site will run your browser through the wringer and may
succeed in diagnosing and fixing the problem you're having:

rpggamergirl,

The image in the instance you indicate is shown as "<img src="img.php?size=6">". This means the PHP is creating and streaming the image on the fly. IE is notorious for not handling poorly formed streamed images, so it may be that their script is a little buggy, and your IE can't handle it. What version of IE are you having trouble with?

Thanks lherrou,
Is that why other site's codes show but not theirs?

IE Version:6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519

by: lherrouPosted on 2008-05-01 at 10:39:40ID: 21480791

Yes, it may be that they upgraded their PHP version or server OS with a bugfix or something like that, and it slightly changed the stream of data, so your browser isn't recognizing it. I have a couple older versions of IE and get the red X when I go to the site you mention, but FF doesn't seem to have trouble, nor IE 7.

lherrou,
So it's just my IE being old huh, I thought it might've something to do with Shockwave failing to install as well. I guess one day I might try and  upgrade to IE7(don't really want to since some users are having problems with IE7)

Merete,
I'd much preferred to fix it without installing stuff. I also went to your other link and did some tests, and I passed a long test of level one, wanted to skip level 2 but won't let me....and level 3 has 300 features? no thanks.
Sorry but I don't think browsertune will help. I've also seen one of Fred Langa's batchfile and what it did to one user so I'm a bit skeptical, but even so I still did the level one test, and because it's too long I didn't bother to do level 2 and level 3 put me off, sorry.
Anyway thank you for the links, I really appreciate it.

I'll just sit back and see if anything comes to mind.
At least it's heading in the direction now

by: BillDLPosted on 2008-05-03 at 01:56:33ID: 21491798

rpggamergirl

This may be something as simple as an invalid "ContentType" for the image file type in the registry.

A lot of image editors mess with image file associations, most annoyingly the "ContentType" value.  Example changed by installation of Paint Shop Pro 7:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.png]
@="PSP7.Image" <-------------- default is "pngfile"
"Content Type"="image/jfif" <- Should be "image/png"
"PerceivedType"="image" <----- This is OK

The "Content Type" and "PerceivedType" values are what really affect whether the image displays in IE and OE, so here are the default values for *.bmp and *.png in a *.reg file format that should repair any wrong "Content Type" values:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp]
"Content Type"="image/bmp"
"PerceivedType"="image"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.png]
"Content Type"="image/png"
"PerceivedType"="image"

There is also the issue that some security patches addressed a potential problem of maliciously malformed headers in some file types causing security holes, and stopped them displaying in IE and OE.

by: BillDLPosted on 2008-05-03 at 02:21:11ID: 21491837

In case you are wondering why I have zoomed in on the *.png and *.bmp file types, look at the code that causes the Security Image to display in the page you gave (url made absolute rather than relative):

<img src="http://www.midnight-torrents.com/img.php?size=6">

The "size=6" dictates the number of characters that display overlaid on the blue background of the image which has the coloured circles.  Change this to 56 in the address bar and hit "Go" and you'll see that it overlays 56 characters on the image which is stretched to accommodate the number of characters.  Minimum is 3, so "size=1" or "size=2" doesn't work.  You'll see that it opens at the minimum 3 characters if you open the page:
http://www.midnight-torrents.com/img.php
There's no maximum as far as I can see.

OK, so assuming the image shows in your new web page from the above link, Right-Click on it and choose "Save Picture As".  It will default to "untitled.bmp".  Save this and see if you can do a "File > Open" in IE and open the saved image.

Go back and this time Right-Click on the image and choose "Email Picture".  Assuming that OE is the default email client, it should open a new email with "img.png" attached.  If you use the OE "File > Save Attachments" menu option, you can save "img.png" and then see if IE can browse to and open that *.png image.

I'm not sure if the "Email Picture" process converts the originally displayed image to a *.png file from whatever format it was, but it's worthwhile testing this option to see if you can determine if this is simply an image file type problem rather than something more elaborate like server-side *.php scripts.

By the way, the Security Image itself is NOT cached to the Temporary Internet Files folder.  The "starbg.jpg" and "bar.gif" images cached are just part of the web page.  The "java_klappe.js" script doesn't seem to have any significance to the problem, and the "default.css" style sheet is for page layout only.

One other file is cached, but copies out as an empty *.txt file, ie. ffffff[1].txt.  I don't know what this does, except maybe temporarily store form details, but may be significant to the problem.

BillDL,

This is what I have in those keys originally, the "content type" and "perceived" type under

HKCR\.bmp are already correct, but I didn't have those values under HKCR\.png, so I merged

your reg file but still no joy after that, thanks.

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp]
@="EasyShare.bmp"
"Content Type"="image/bmp"
"PerceivedType"="image"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp\OpenWithList]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp\OpenWithList\MSPaint.exe]
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp\OpenWithList\ois.exe]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp\OpenWithProgids]
"EasyShare.bmp"=hex:
"Paint.Picture"=hex(0):

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp\PersistentHandler]
@="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp\ShellNew]
"NullFile"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.png]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.png\OpenWithList]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.png\OpenWithList\ois.exe]
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.png\PersistentHandler]
@="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp\UndoClass]
@="OISbmpfile"

Your second post;
>>>OK, so assuming the image shows in your new web page from the above link, Right-Click on

it and <<<
IE won't show those images.

>>> Save this and see if you can do a "File > Open" in IE and open the saved image.<<<
I saved it with Firefox and default "img.php.png",
IE > File > Open > browse >(need to show *All files) then Windows Picture and Fax Viewer opens it.
Rightclicking on the saved "img.php.png" > open with IE > and it opens it in IE(after I clicked OK for activex and after quicktime flashed)

If it helps in diagnoses, IE CAN display security codes on this site -->

by: BillDLPosted on 2008-05-04 at 01:43:05ID: 21495075

Hi rpggamergirl

Pity the Content Type registry values didn't resolve this, but *.png files are a pain in Windows and IE.

The other login page seems to present the Security Image in *.jpg encoding from what I can see at first glance, which is why I believe it works and the other doesn't.

I'll try and rake up as many other *.png-related registry entries as I can to see if any others may be restricting this.

by: BillDLPosted on 2008-05-10 at 05:37:15ID: 21538780

Hi rpggamergirl

I said that I would "rake up as many other *.png-related registry entries as I can to see if any others may be restricting this", but I can only see ONE key and value in my system that could cause restrictions.  Even then, I am not absolutely certain of exactly how the values are used.

I have attached a *.txt file of my *.reg exports, but commented it with what I can ascertain.  If you look at the keys and values:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\pngfile]
"ImageOptionFlags"=dword:00000003

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.png]
"ImageOptionFlags"=dword:00000003

It would appear from some web forums concerning IE7 not displaying PNG files, and another user wishing to prevent PNG files from being "Set as Wallpaper", that modifying the value of "ImageOptionFlags" from 1 to 3, or 3 to 1 (respectively), that it fixes the issue.

What are yours set to?

Back up those keys to *.reg files and try changing:
"ImageOptionFlags"=dword:00000003
to:
"ImageOptionFlags"=dword:00000002
and:
"ImageOptionFlags"=dword:00000001
to see what happens.

You would probably have to reboot to be sure that the changes were applied.

Regards
Bill

by: rpggamergirlPosted on 2008-05-10 at 20:35:43ID: 21541388

Hi Bill,

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\pngfile]
"ImageOptionFlags"=dword:00000003

in the above registry key, I have the same value already, so I changed it to 2 and reboot, no joy, changed it to 1 reboot, no joy still. I've changed it back to 3.

The below reg key I didn't have, so I created it with your reg, no joy, changed the value to 2 and then to 1 still no joy, so I'm gonna delete it.
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.png]
"ImageOptionFlags"=dword:00000003

There's another thing I want to try that I haven't done yet.
I'll give update to this thread when I can.
I really appreciate your help and everyone. thanks

Thank you all for your efforts, and to BillDL who stayed with me right to the end. I also felt blessed to have Vee_Mod participated in this thread. You're all awesome.
Sorry for the small points, you deserved a lot more than I'm allowed to give.
Thank you!

by: rpggamergirlPosted on 2008-05-22 at 08:38:37ID: 21624795

The problem has not been resolved, but I have to close this as the "You have open question" alerts keeps reminding me, and since there are no new suggestions to try, this might as well be closed.

I think maybe lherrou might be right on this one, but I'd like to distribute points as other experts have also put in a lot of valuable infos that would probably help future database searchers.

Thank you all for your help. I really appreciate the time you put in to try and find a solution to this issue.
Regards!

Thank you rpggamergirl.
Yeah, I hate those "you have an open question prompts", especially when you're trying to find the time to test out various suggestions between other commitments.  I hope you get the issue fixed.

by: rpggamergirlPosted on 2008-05-29 at 06:31:24ID: 21668898

Sorry BillDL, I'm very slow in the 'reply' dept.

That's exactly right, those "prompts" were not much help.
I'm putting this issue in the back burner at the moment.
If anyone think of something, let me know by posting back and I'll post another question.

Thanks again.
