Question

Internet Explorer 7 - Hangs While Trying To Connect...

Asked by: dercoss

When I try and open Internet Explorer 7 on an XP Home machine it says "connecting" but gets no further. I can access the internet through Firefox so I know I am connected to the internet.

I've run various spyware checks, etc without success.

Any idea's what to try next?

Hello dercoss,

1. Clear your cache in IE.

2. Change the Maximum Transmission Unit in the registry
http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/280/

3. Check if antispyware, antivirus, or firewall is blocking IE.  Temporarily disable the program to test or allow IE in the program.

Hope this helps!

yes i had this yesterday..

is it on opening a new tab?

try this anyway:

go to tools/internet options/programs/manage add ons

and disable all the references to the windows live toolbar
if that still doesnt work disable everything that relates to windows live .....

this seems to be an update by microsoft and its caused a lot of trouble for a lot of people

I've tried clearing the cache and changing the MTU without success. Regarding Glumlun's suggestions; I can open a new tab but it does the same thing. ie. it says connecting (whatever the site) and no more. Also, I can't open manage addons as it doesn't open.

I've checked an Windows Live isn't installed on the pc.

Currently I'm running a virus check to see if that finds anything..

wuauclt is usually your WindowsUpdates.

Chances are that your machine might be waiting for a Reboot, also.

One other thing to check is your Firewall. Typically when IE or any browser is updated, a firewall MIGHT not ask or recognize an updated browser as being secure and it will not allow it out.

What Firewall or Security Suites (programs) are you running?

I have had success resetting ZoneAlarms database and Kaspersky's as well if you can't modify it for it some reason.
