Question

D-Link 524 router blocking access to specific website

Asked by: dante1001

I have a DI-524 DLink wireless router which is blocking the access to a certain website (namely www.sodblog.com). If I connect to the internet through ethernet cable, leaving the router out of it, I can open the site, so the problem must be in the router, but i cannot solve it. Any suggestions? Tried with Opera, Firefox and IE, no avail.

google max mtu. i suspect once you put the router into the loop the extra bit of info that it throws int the tcp stack header causes an overflow for the mtu packet size. so you need to lock your machine to alower max mtu size.

Cheers

i'd suggest that as unlikely - the times that MTU size causes an issue is more often in a vpn situation - where the pcket payload plus header become to large and can be dropped where the do not fragment flag set.

have you completed a factory reset on the router then retested?

by: AndrewJDavisPosted on 2008-05-04 at 00:02:47ID: 21494789

granted.
Factory reset is a bit harsh.
lets way up the two options.
Check and set MTU. 10 Minutes.
factory Reset Router. Depending on how configured (Portforwards and VPN's can take hours.
I have seen many instances outside VPN where MTU causes issues. I would check this first as is quick and easy.

a rebuild of a dlink DI-524 should take 15 mins, if you have difficulties.   there is no mention of vpn or port forward requirements, and if that was part of the equation, then i'd be even more inclined to agree with you re MTU.  a reset would clear the mtu settign on the router -

it could also be the encapsulation - pppoe vs pppoa etc - again reviewed with the reset.

by: AndrewJDavisPosted on 2008-05-04 at 02:21:02ID: 21495148

agreed.
max mtu still easier and quicker

by: naughtonPosted on 2008-05-04 at 02:23:48ID: 21495154

opens the door to posibly cause further issues though, in the situation where the user may be unaware of the implcations of what they are doing, and how to reverse any changes made.

dante1001 - how'd you go?

by: dante1001Posted on 2008-05-04 at 03:11:31ID: 21495214

ok, so I changed the MTU to 1400
no luck
did a reset
nothing
changed MTU to 1400 (after the reset)
still nothing

okay down to basics.
can you ping www.sodblog.com? What ip does it resolve to? it should resolve to 74.53.210.91
if it reslove to anything else then the page will not load.

It may be an issue with you DNS server.
You could add an entry into your hosts file to get around this, if this is the issue.
see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file for info about hosts file

by: dante1001Posted on 2008-05-04 at 07:36:08ID: 21495770

I can ping it. Not sure how the hosts file works though, I added an entry in the file but I get a warning sign >>>

by: AndrewJDavisPosted on 2008-05-04 at 07:45:47ID: 21495803

i see you are running spybot, that has customized your hosts file.
you will notice all the entries that look like
127.0.0.1      www.somedomain.com

what his does is blocks you from going to those sites that are listed. basically when you type in a domain name the computer needs to get a number for the domain. it first looks at its own hosts file then if there is no entry it will go to the dns servers to get a resolution.

not sure what the warning is about. Does sodblog appear anywhere else (i dont think this would be the issue as then it would not work via either modem or router, but doesnt hurt to check). Can you double click the warning indicator to get a description of the warning?

by: dante1001Posted on 2008-05-04 at 07:49:55ID: 21495815

checked for another sodblog entry, none present, already tried with spybot and windows firewall off, but shouldn't matter as it works without the router indeed.
I'm trying to find out what the warning sign means, but the help file isn't very extensive...
