It sounds like the local firewall might be blocking the other applications; can you try turning it off?
(control panel, security, windows firewall)  If it works with the firewall disabled, then you need to create a rule for the other internet applications.

Hello thedogsbloggs,

Check if other programs are interfering with the applications.  laneduncan suggested the firewall.  If not the firewall, disable antivirus, antispyware, ad blocker, and any Norton programs.

Your Maximum Transmission Unit may have changed.  Change the Maximum Transmission Unit in the registry

Hope this helps!

Hi, thanx for yr ideas, I tried that previously, even to the point of removing av and firewall's completely but unfortunately to no avail. I've also tried disabling all the services and startup items I didn't recognise, still the problem exists. It makes no sense that the internet should work in these programs in safe mode and not normally. any other ideas, it's giving me a headache lol

thedogsbloggs, reset the MTU as I have shown above. MTU may have been optimize for IE, but nothing else works.

Hiya, I tried this via the instructions on the link you gave, the problem still exists unfortunately. Should I leave the entry in the registry even though the problem still exists or should I remove it? and sorry once again, but any more ideas? :-) sure we'll get there eventually!

by: war1Posted on 2008-05-13 at 09:15:30ID: 21556540

Leave the entry in registry.

Run this script to fix your connection. The script reinstall winsock, TCP/IP stack, and HOSTS file.

Though the site seems valid, the browser was unable to establish a connection.

*  Are you unable to browse other sites?  Check the computer's network connection.
*  Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy? Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing.

I cannot connect to www.xlaweb.net either.  Try another webpage to connect

The problem is not the browsers, but the website.

thedogsbloggs,

Download and run Hijack This http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis
Copy/paste the log here (As Code Snippet) so we can see it.

Sounds like a stuck firewall. Perhaps we can see what you might be overlooking.

Are you using both Symantec antivirus and NOD32 antivirus?  You should only have one antivirus at a time, or they will conflict with each other and causes other system problems.

No, I''m only using Eset smart security at the moment the others are disabled.

In response to yr previous proxy question, I don't think so, but I've tried settings in all the browsers on both 'auto detect proxy settings' and to 'no proxy' neither of these made a difference so I defaulted back to 'auto detect proxy settings'

thedogsbloggs,

You still have either Zone Alarms Firewall installed or the other one that uses vsmon.exe, I'm pretty sure it's Zone Alarm though.

There is the possibility you didn't remove it properly. If you believe you removed it, see this page.

If you simply Disabled it, this page may help.

Hi, sorry for the delayed reply, I've been away. This problem I have is stopping me from installing zone alarm because the installer cannot connect to the internet, any ideas?

Have you tried the manual uninstall?
Looks like they keep changing the page on me, sorry.

I ended up downloading a copy of zonealarm from file hippo so that it didn't need a connection when installing. after installing that everything was fine. I suppose I could have installed zonealarm in safemode as well where the internet was working fine. Thanks again fro the help!
