Can I Login to My Vista Ultimate OS Home Computer Using Internet Explorer Instead of Remote Desktop?

Asked by finkkatz in Web Browsers, Windows Vista, Remote Desktop/Terminal Services

I have Vista Ultimate on my home computer and I recently registered a domain name and configured the host record to point to my IP address.  I configured my router to port forward to the desktop computer on my network.  I thought by doing this I could open up an IE browser anywhere, type in the domain name, and  then my login screen on my desktop would appear.  I was wrong.  The only way I can remote in to my home computer is to use Remote Desktop.  In the remote desktop window, If I either type in my IP address or the domain name, my desktop login screen pops up.  Thus, I figure I've configured everything right with my domain name registrar as well is in my router.  I assume there is some other component missing that I have to configure to make this work from IE, but I don't know what it is. I know that when I login to my SBS server in my office, when I put in the public domain name, the SBS login screen pops up in my browser, and once I click my way to my desktop, I can remote into it.  Is this something that a non server version of Windows can do?Start Free Trial
