The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. One computer in LAN getting much slower http xfer, ftp ok

About 2 weeks ago downloading in browsers (Firefox 3.0, IE 7.0) on  my main desktop  got noticeably slower.  The other computers in my LAN  running same OS/browsers are working fine.  The difference is more pronounced when the internet is slower (I'm in Indonesia and top speeds at best here are 384 Kbs).  Usually I would see speeds of about 1/4th of the other machines for http downloading (upload at same speed).   I tried the usual: rebooting, running speed tests on different browsers, using Process Explorer to check for errant processes, checking for viruses/spyware, even temporarily disabling my firewall (Zone Alarm Security Suite) ...   Eventually I installed a different network card (one wireless USB connection and a physically new network card) and disabled the onboard network card in the BIOS.  Both of these (whichever one I used) speeded things up by a factor of two, but I'm still typically running half the speed of my other machines.  Interestingly when the net is not so busy I'll get speeds of about 80% (e.g. 265Kbs vs 330Kbs), but during the day more typically getting 120Kbs vs 240Kbs (using old network card it was 60Kbs!).

 FTP transfer works fine and at same speed on all, so that seems to say the network itself is OK.

Anyhow I'm looking for ideas/suggestions on how to correct this -- it's making things difficult.Start Free Trial
