IE very slow, usually ends up at "page cannot be displayed"

OK, this one really has me stumped. IE6 running on Microsoft Server 2003.

Problem I'm having is that I cannot open up any moderately complex website -- IE will churn for awhile then come back with "page cannot be displayed". Examples of what I can and cannot get to:

update.microsoft.com -- will not open (this is why I noticed and even care about the problem...no, I don't surf the web from my servers. More info follows on this)
www.google.com -- comes up fine
www.yahoo.com -- usually will not come up
www.dice.com -- opens fine
www.msn.com -- never opens

Additional info -- update.microsoft.com opens up fine then hangs at "Checking if your computer has the latest version of Windows updating software for use with the website...". Then it just hangs.

I've done all of the normal virus / spyware / set IE configurations back to default / etc. type of stuff (even though the symptoms deviate from what I would normally expect to see on these issues).

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. Remember that this is a live server -- so I can't go haywire on troubleshooting. Crashing the server so that I can get IE going would not be acceptable.
