Question

Why is MSN Main Homepage showing up as text only?

Asked by: Jaizey

We have a couple of machines that have mysteriously had the MSN Homepage start showing up in an Outline, Text Only, Style. ALL OTHER MSN pages are fine (MSN Money, Auto, Tech all populate properly).
Nothing we do seems to solve this issue. We are on Windows XP Pro SP2+ systems with Java v6 r14, running MSIE 7.0.5730.13.
We have deleted all cookies, offline content, history, reset all settings to default, security to default, reinstalled MSIE 7....
The users want to use MSIE and this particular homepage.
It really seems like tit should be an easy fix, but we are just missing it apparently; any ideas?

Can you update IE to the latest patches. Or goto ie8.

That should fix the problem.

I believe the images are loading. The problem is that IE is not loading CSS.

To check whether this is not a system error, try installing FF or Crome onto one of the effected computers and see if the site loads correctly. If it does, it's an IE specific error.

Installed MSIE 8; no change.
Installed FireFox 3.5 (did not import any settings, etc); no change.
MSN.com main page still shows up as indicated above...
Weird and frustrating, but that is why we gave this question 500 points :-)
...CSS?

Do any of the computer use a Modified "host file."?

I believe all the MSN.com CSS files come from

http://s-msn.com

look for s-msn.com in the Hosts file Open it with Notepad.

If that entry is in the file delete the whole line.

Windows Vista = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

I will check the other recommendations, but it may stand to mention that content filtering is enabled on the Enterprise level firewall and both those computers are in the same admin group for the CF.
We'll let you know what we find!

by: JaizeyPosted on 2009-07-23 at 03:22:56ID: 24923456

No accessibility options enabled & nothing but the localhost listed in the host file.
We will chedk the firewall in the AM.
Thank you; I hope this will lead to the solution so we can award points for your work.

by: selvolPosted on 2009-07-23 at 06:37:30ID: 24924986

Yes, it could be the firewall or some sort of spam/internet filtering program.

Apologies for the first assumption. 99% sure the problem is not in IE or FF or any other browser.

If you go to the hosts file on a working system and add this line.

o.o.o.o. col.stc.s-msn.com

and save the file. Close your browser and go to Msn.com you should get the same picture you and I posted.

Proving the theory some thing is not letting
col.stc.s-msn.com

or just try to Download this file as a test.

http://col.stc.s-msn.com/br/hp/11/en-us/css/ie6_17.css</A>

Depending what the situation is.  You could download the above css file from a good compute. Load it onto the bad computer then ,the in the Internet explorer option under accessibility link to that css .

If needed. But the every page would use that css?

No firewall blocks can be found; local systems firewalls are disabled.
Running Symantec Corp Ed 10, so that should not be an issue.
Sonicwall has "*.msn.com" white-listed... still cannot determine the cause.

by: BreaITPosted on 2009-07-27 at 08:48:15ID: 24952828

I was having the very same problem. We are using Sonicwall in our site and apparently sonicwall was categorizing col.stc.s-msn.com as Chat/IM, which is blocked content. As soon as I created the exception under Content Filtering the issue was resovled. So, if you are using a content filter make sure you allow this url: col.stc.s-msn.com

Thank you so much for your input!
Our client was very appreciative to have a solution after all that we went through trying to find it.
We have asked Sonicwall to reclassify the site as News/Media.
