In firefox it is straight forward, you will find it in options.

Tools > Options > Security > Saved Passwords > Show Passwords

IE:

If you're on a page with the login screen and the password is autofilled into the box... copy and paste the below in the addressbar and click enter... the password will popup

could you describe why this works with internet explorer

This is not only for internet explorer.. it works in firefox as well. IE doesn't give you an option to display the password.

The password boxes are coded so when you type anything in there, it shows dots... but the value on the form element has the actual value since you did type something in. So idea behind this javascript is to display what is stored in that form element.
