after installing firefox 29 on windows xp sp3 it won't run.
watching task manager firefox appears and then disappears.
tried ideas from mozilla with no luck, can't run firefox.exe -profilemanager or in safe mode either.
tried version 20 also same thing.
ran malwarebytes, removed a trojan and several pup's, uninstalled mcafee (ran out anyway),
check host file and disabled lmhost

Completely uninstall Firefox with something like revo uninstaller, make sure all files folders and registry points are gone, and reinstall. There might be something corrupt that it's not being over written.

Since you did have a virus, I would check the ImageFileExecutionOptions key in the registry. Nasties will place entries in that key and remap the entry to svchost. In other words, you could place a value in there like so:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\notepad.exe\Debugger = "calculator.exe"

If this entry was in that key, every time notepad was launched, calculator would open instead. Wuith viruses, it is usually remapped to svchost, which is invisible to the user. When that happens, you launch the program, it appears to open then goes away immediately.

Look in the key for any entries relating to firefox.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options
Thanks for all the ideas. I had run McAfee Security Scan  after running Malwarebytes but it did not find anything. It made since that something was stopping Firefox and Chrome from running so I installed AVG and before I could do an update it started to find more infections. After an update and full scan it found even more infections. I had already uninstalled Firefox and checked the registry so I downloaded newest version and up it came.
Again thanks for the help.
