Safari renaming office documents (.xls to .xla)

Asked by Geesu in Safari Web Browser, Leopard (MAC OS 10.5)

Whenever I download an office file Safari is renaming it to work with the mac equivalent - i HATE this - how can I turn this off so safari NEVER renames a file I'm downloading.

IMO this is the dumbest feature ever - if office isn't installed OS X should just re-map the .xls and .doc to the iWork app.
